Game Preview
The Kennesaw State women's lacrosse team begins their 2017 season on Saturday, February 11 against the Vanderbilt Commodores at 2 p.m.
This will be the fifth meeting in five seasons against the Commodores. Last year, KSU dropped the contest 16-6.
The game is being broadcasted on Facebook Live.
Kennesaw State Team Notes
• This game will be the first for new head coach
Laura Maness. She takes over the helm after her five year tenure as the winningest coach in Detroit Mercy history and led them to four straight Atlantic Sun Championship games.
• Maness rounded out her staff with
Devon Schneider and
Shannon Nee, who both played Division I lacrosse at a high level. Schneider played at the University of Florida winning four regular season titles with two being in the American League Conference and two being in the Big East while compiling a 69-14 record as a player. Nee started all four years in the goal at University of Connecticut and was named an IWLCA All-American, made the IWLCA All-Northeast Region First Team four times and won Big East Goalkeeper of the Year two times.
• Last season, Kennesaw State finished with five wins matching a program high. The three wins in conference play were the most the program has won in its four years of existence.
• The Owls three captains this season are
Taylor McGhee,
Megan Tobias and
Sydney Farwick. Now a senior, McGhee has been a captain all four seasons.
• The ASUN has added Coastal Carolina and Delaware State this season giving the conference 11 teams. Kennesaw State was picked to finish in seventh place in the preseason coach's poll.
•KSU returns 19 players from a season ago with 12 newcomers to the roster.
• Among the 12 newcomers,
Maura Palandro and
Izzy Palermo were named to the Preseason ASUN Watchlist for incoming players. Palandro is a freshman from York, Pennsylvania and Palermo is a local student-athlete from Marietta, Georgia.
•
Connor Zophy made a big jump on the offensive end from her freshman to sophomore season. She was the second leading scorer a season ago with 19 goals. Zophy had 11 assists as well to finish third on the team with 30 points. Her freshman season, Zophy finished with 10 goals and 12 assists.
• In
Laura Jordan's first two season's in an Owls uniform she has 51 caused turnovers.
• Farwick is set to begin her senior season. In her first three seasons, she has been named Second Team All-Conference every year. Farwick has 128 career points with her career high for points in a season being 55 her sophomore campaign.
Next Up
Kennesaw State will have its home opener on Tuesday, February 28 against Marquette. The game will begin 1 p.m. at Fifth Third Bank Stadium.
