AUGUSTA, Ga. – Competing in one of the strongest fields of the season, Kennesaw State posted an even-par score of 560 during Saturday's opening day of the 3M Augusta Invitational and has positioned itself for strong finish.
The Owls carded rounds of 286 and 290 at the par-72, 7,231-yard Forest Hills Golf Club and are tied with No. 38 Pepperdine for eighth place in the 15-team field that includes 10 teams ranked in Golfstat's Top 50.
Host and 35th-ranked Augusta leads the tournament with an 18-under par 558, three shots ahead of No. 2 Texas and No. 4 Illinois, who are at 15-under par 561. Fourteenth-ranked South Florida (562) is third and followed by No. 3 Georgia (569), and No. 40 New Mexico and No. 44 Tennessee, who are at 4-under par 572.
"Although we got off to a hot start this morning, we weren't able to keep our momentum as the conditions toughened. We did not take advantage of the par-5s and scored next to last in that category," head coach
Bryant Odom said. "If we can improve on that and continue to make good decisions elsewhere, we will move up the leaderboard tomorrow and produce a nice finish."
Junior
Teremoana Beaucousin led the Owls on day one, posting rounds of 73-69 for a 2-under par 142 and is tied for 16th, six shots off the lead held by Beau Hossler (Texas), who produced scores a pair of 68s for an 8-under par total of 136. Hossler holds a one-shot lead over four players.
Sophomore
Fredrik Nilehn (73-70 – 143) is tied for 21st, while
Wyatt Larkin (67-78 – 145) is tied for 33rd,
Christopher Guglielmo (75-73 – 148) is tied for 48th, and freshman
Jake Fendt (73, 81 – 154) is tied for 70th.
The 3M Augusta Invitational concludes on Sunday with Kennesaw State grouped with Pepperdine and Tennessee and scheduled to tee off on the first hole beginning at 8:30 a.m. Live scoring will be available at
