Wyatt Larkin, the Kennesaw State men's golf team leads the 2016 Atlantic Sun Championship at Chateau Elan's Legends Course. Larkin is the tournament's individual leader by a stroke, and the Owls are six strokes clear of the field with two rounds remaining.
KSU shot a five-under 283 and is the only school in red figures on the 7,032-yard, par-72 track. Larkin's 69 leads the tournament, while teammate
Fredrik Nilehn (70) is among a group of four players just one stroke back. All five Owls are among the tournament's top 20 with
Jake Fendt (71) tied for sixth,
Teremoana Beaucousin (73) tied for 12th and
Christopher Guglielmo (75) in 20th.
"We got off to a pretty good start and turned about even, one-under," said head coach
Bryant Odom. "The guys turned it on on the back and finished strong, which we've preached all year. There were a lot of birdies coming in down the stretch -- that's how you win golf tournaments. We needed either Chris or Teremoana to step up after the turn and they both maintained, which is all you can ask for out here. It was a very good team effort today. Everything we've worked for is right in front of us and we've got ourselves in position."
The five Owls combined to shoot seven-under par over the course's final five holes on Sunday with eight biridies, 16 pars and just one bogey. Larkin led with way with a three-under 33 on the back that was highlighted by birdies on 10, 13 and 15. Fendt birdied three of the final five holes, including the tough 481-yard, par-4 17th -- one of only three red numbers the penultimate hole yielded Sunday.
"Wyatt has been playing really well," said Odom. "He's had some back issues this season, so with just 18 holes per day, it really sets up well for him. He's putted great and that's what he did best today. This type of course sets up well for him. It's not overly-long, but he's very accurate and he's a great putter."
Six strokes behind Kennesaw State is Lipscomb, which posted a one-over 289. Defending champion North Florida shot 290, followed by Florida Gulf Coast (294), Jacksonville (294), USC Upstate (301) and Stetson (308).
The championship's second round begins Monday at 8:30 a.m., with the Owls set to tee off at 10 a.m.
