Pablo Rodriguez-Tabernero Torres continued his solid play as of late, carding a 2-under par 70 and is tied for second after Sunday's opening round of the 18-team Tiger Invitational that is being played at the par-72, 7,149-yard Grand National Lake Course in Pelika, Ala.

Torres and sophomore
Fredrik Nilehn, who posted a 1-under 71 and is tied for sixth, helped the Owls to a 3-over par 291 and in a tie for third after the first round. Host and No. 5 Auburn tops the field following a 3-under 285 and is five shots ahead of Troy (290). The Owls are tied with Minnesota and No. 25 Kentucky for third place.

Torres is one of four players one shot behind Auburn's Matt Gilchrest who shot a first-round 4-under par 68 to take the lead after 18 holes.

"We had a very solid overall round today. After a little bit of a slow start and some mistakes in the middle of the round, we got it turned around and finished very well," head coach
Bryant Odom said. "This is a golf course that takes a lot of patience and discipline, and the team was up to the test today."

Freshman
Jake Fendt opened with 2-over par 74 and is tied for 28th, while junior Chris Guglielmo (76) is tied for 47th, and freshman
Buster Bruton is tied for 68th after carding a 6-over 78.

"Fred and Pablo paced us with strong rounds," Odom said. "With some more consistent play throughout the team, we can move up the leaderboard."

The Tiger Invitational continues on Monday (Mar. 7) with Kennesaw State grouped with Auburn and Troy and scheduled to tee off from the first hole beginning at 10:15 (ET). All the action can be followed live at
