GREENSBORO, Ga. – Kennesaw State carded a final-round 1-over par 289 to finish at 2-over par 866 to place fifth at the Linger Longer Invitational that concluded Tuesday (Mar. 22) at the par-72, 7,073-yard Great Waters Course at Reynolds Lake Oconee in Greensboro, Ga.
The Owls were led by sophomore
Fredrik Nilehn who tied for fourth after posting a third-round 1-under par 71 to conclude the tournament with a 54-hole total of 6-under par 210. Nilehn's finish marked his third top 20 and second top 10 showing of the season as he placed ahead of 11 players ranked in Golfstat's Top 100.
"We got off to a solid start but stumbled in the middle holes," head coach
Bryant Odom said. " The guys made some nice birdies on the back (nine) and on the last hole to secure the fifth place finish.
"Having three of our players in the top 15 here is very exciting," Odom added. " We have the Easter weekend off to rest and will be ready for Augusta the following weekend."
Twelfth-ranked Alabama captured the team title with a 12-under par total of 852, to finish three shots ahead of No. 2 Georgia and No. 39 Georgia. Both teams finished play at 9-under par 855.
The Bulldogs carded the low round of the tournament on Tuesday, recording a 12-under 276 total. Twenty-first ranked Virginia placed fourth at 3-under par 861, five shots better than Kennesaw State. The Owls finished ahead of No. 25 Baylor and No. 26 Purdue as the 13-team field included six teams ranked in Golfstat's Top 50.
Georgia's Lee McCoy claimed individual medalist honors with a 9-under par score of 207 to finish ahead of Bulldogs teammate Sepp Straka.
Freshman
Jake Fendt, who played as an individual turned in his fourth top 20 and second top 10 finish after tying for eighth at 3-under par 213.
Junior
Christopher Guglielmo added another Top 20 showing to his resume as he tied for 14th with a 1-under par total of 215.
Freshman
Pablo Rodriguez-Tabernero Torres (223, +7) shot a final-round 2-under par 70 to tie for 41st, while sophomore
Wyatt Larkin (224, +8) and
Teremoana Beaucousin (226, +10) tied for 46th and 52nd, respectively. Senior
Carlos Segura Oliva, who competed as an individual, also tied for 52nd.
Kennesaw State will now take a two-week break before opening play at the 3M Augusta Invitational, hosted by Augusta State at Forest Hills Country Club beginning April 9.
