Lihu'e, Kaua'I – Kennesaw State posted a final-round 6-over par 294 to finish in ninth place with a 54-hole total of 15-over par 879 at the John A. Burns Intercollegiate that concluded Friday (Feb. 19) at the par-72, 6,991-yard Wailua Golf Course in Lihu'e, Kaua'I.
The Owls' finish came in an event in which six of the 16 teams in the field are ranked in Golfstat's Top 50. Eighth-ranked Texas claimed the team title with a 20-under par total of 844, five shots ahead of No. 17 California (849).
"Although not the overall result we hoped for, we can take away some positives to start the spring," head coach
Bryant Odom said. "Pablo (Rodriguez-Tabernero-Torres) played a very steady tournament, relying on his short game to carry momentum through each round."
That momentum carried Rodriguez-Tabernero Torres to his second career Top 20 finish as he tied for 12th with a 1-under par total of 215 after posting his second straight round of 71. The Owls' freshman posted scores of 73-71-71 while establishing a career-best 54-hole total.
Sophomore
Wyatt Larkin tied for 26th at 2-over par 218 after posting a final-round 2-over par 74. Sophomore
Fredrik Nilehn closed with an even-par 72 to tie for 36th at 4-over par 220, while freshman
Jake Fendt (227) tied for 57th and junior
Teremoana Beaucousin (231) tied for 80th.
"Wyatt showed some great progress after being injured most the gall," Odom said. "We will learn from the mistakes that cost us late in rounds, and will become a stronger team in the events to come."
Kennesaw State will have two weeks off before returning to action at the Grand National Lakes Golf Club in Opelika, Ala. for the Tiger Invitational that gets underway on March 6.
