NEWARK, N.J. – The Kennesaw State women's soccer team moved closer to clinching a berth in the ASUN Conference Tournament after defeating NJIT, 3-0, Saturday afternoon in Newark, N.J.

The Owls (8-7-1, 3-3-0) can secure a conference tournament berth later today pending the outcome of the Florida Gulf-Coast-Jacksonville contest that begins at 7 p.m. A Jacksonville loss or tie will clinch KSU's fifth consecutive tournament appearance.

Kennesaw State dominated the first 45 minutes of the match against NJIT (6-8-2, 2-4-0) as it out-shot the Highlanders, 8-2, and held an 8-0 advantage in shots-on-goal. KSU finished the match with a 15-5 edge in shots, including 12-1 in shots-on-goal.

Cassidy Kemp led a big day for the Owls' seniors as she scored her team-leading sixth goal of the season, scoring a goal after senior
Brittney Reed crossed the ball into the far side of the box where senior
Kim Fincher headed the ball to Kemp, who finished at the 24:36 mark. Â

The Owls added to their lead early in the second half when senior
Monica Herrera converted a penalty kick at the 53:31 mark and senior
Kim Fincher wrapped up the days scoring with a goal in the 76th after receiving an assist from senior
Maggie Gaughan and junior
Jessica Sexton. Fincher collected her sixth goal of the season, tying her with Kemp for the team lead.

"We played well today under some tough conditions, and having our first flight," head coach
Benji Walton said. "The team did a really good job of staying focused and playing a strong team game. It was a good game of us executing some things and playing together."

"We were knocking on the door in four straight possessions and their keeper came up with some big saves. Kim did an amazing job of keeping the ball in play after a nice serve from Brittney, and Cassidy did a great job finishing. That's how you draw it up."

The Owls close out their regular season next Saturday when they travel to Spartanburg, S.C. to take on USC Upstate in a match that begins at 1 p.m. (ET).
