Results Birmingham, Ala. – The Kennesaw State track and field teams were back in action at the UAB Vulcan Invitational on Saturday January 16 at the Birmingham Crossplex.
"We were blessed to have another string of great performances today," Director of Track and Field and Cross Country
Andy Eggerth said. "Our student-athletes continue to put the pieces together. Now that more A-Sun schools and athletes have competed the conference picture is starting to take form. It's fun to watch the season progress and how teams stack up. Our women are looking very solid in the Atlantic Sun and our men should move up in the National rankings next time they come out."
On the men's side, Senior
Bilal Abdullah had another strong performance at the Birmingham Crossplex which will host the NCAA Indoor Championships in March. Abdullah broke his own school record in the long jump with a leap of 7.98m (26-2.25) which earned him the win in the event. That jump is currently the longest in the NCAA this season. It also the second longest jump in the world this indoor season.
Abdullah loves the track at the Bimingham Crossplex and showed again today. He ran a new meet record time of 7.90 seconds to win the preliminary race of the 60m hurdles. He would return to the track just minutes later and win the event amongst collegiate with a time of 7.90 seconds. The time of 7.90 is tied for 11
th currently in the NCAA this season.
Freshman
Dayo Akindele continued his strong freshman campaign with a pair of impressive performances. He ran a time of 8.07 in the 60m hurdle prelims and 8.10 in the finals to finish fourth amongst the collegians in the event.
Akindele had a big day in the long jump pit as well. He jumped 7.40m (24-3.50) to finish second in event behind Abdullah. That jump is currently 25
th best in the NCAA this season.
The men's 4x400m relay team of
Noel Rhymer,
Sean Blassingame,
Zac Davis, and
Joshua Mulder ran a time of 3:19.32 earning a second place finish in their first time running together this season.
The men continued to improve in the throwing events today as well.
Martynas Sedys is creeping back into form in the weight throw with a toss of 18.59m (61-0) to win the event.
Sophomore
Daniel McKune was 9
th in the shot put with a throw of 13.67m (44-10.5) which is his personal best and currently leads the Atlantic Sun.
On the women's side,
Jocselyn Powell led the ladies on the track for the Owls on Saturday. Powell won the 60m hurdles race amongst collegiate athletes in a school record time of 8.51 seconds. She would return to the track and finish 18
th in the 200m dash with a time of 25.34.
Shermaine Pinkard won the weight throw in the weight throw with a toss of 17.35m (56-11.25).
De'von Johnson had another solid day in the jumping pits. She won the triple jump with a leap of 11.78m (38-7.25) and was second in the long jump with after jumping 5.88m (19-3.50).
The Kennesaw State track and field combined eventers will be in action at the Samford Multi and Stand Alone Meet January 20-21 in Birmingham, Al at the Birmingham Crossplex and the Gladstein Invitational hosted by Indiana at the Gladstein Fieldhouse January 22-23 in Bloomington, Indiana.
