KENNESAW, Ga. – Despite outshooting its opponent 22 to 12, the Kennesaw State soccer team suffered a heartbreaking 1-0 double overtime setback to Lipscomb to open Atlantic Sun Conference play on a rainy Saturday night (Sept. 26) at Fifth Third Bank Stadium.
Â
It was a back-and-forth affair throughout much of regulation as both teams pressed for a score, but neither goalkeeper relented. Sophomore
Abby Roth gave the Owls their best chance of regulation when classmate
Ida Hepsoe sent in a corner kick and found Roth's head, but Bison goalkeeper Anna Buhigas was there to make the stop.
Â
With neither team finding the back of the net through the first 90 minutes of play, the match headed to overtime. The Owls opened the first overtime period with one of their best chances of the night as junior
Kim Fincher carried the ball down the left flank, before finding sophomore
Khatra Mahdi in front of goal, but the Brampton, Ontario native's shot was just wide of the mark.
Â
The match looked to be ending in a double overtime tie with 25 second remaining on the clock when Paige Miller sent in a ball from the right side to Natalie Duboise, who placed it into the bottom right corner of the goal for the game-winning score.
Â
The Owls continue A-Sun play as they wrap up their three-match homestand by welcoming in the newest conference member, NJIT, next Saturday (Oct. 3) at 1 p.m. ET in Fifth Third Bank Stadium.
Â
Quotable"I thought it was two good teams and they fought every minute of that game. It was an exciting one to be involved with, a little more exciting if we get the winner in there in overtime, but it was a well-played game. Two times fighting for every minute."
- Kennesaw State Head Coach Rob KingÂ
Notes- Tonight's double-overtime match was the second for the Owls in 2015. KSU also took Clayton State to double-overtime on Aug. 30 with that match ending in a 1-1 tie.
- Sophomore
Ashley Zambetti returned to the starting lineup against the Bisons, recording five saves on the night and not allowing a goal in for over 109 minutes of action.
- The Owls outshot their opponents for the seventh time this season and the first since Furman on Sept. 11 as KSU posted 22 shots to Lipscomb's 12.
- Junior
Kim Fincher led the charge with five shots on goal, her second-highest output of the season.
- Fincher now leads the Owls with 28 shots on the year, with junior
Cassidy Kemp right behind her with 25 shots in 2015.
- Junior
Maggie Gaughan registered four shots on the night, equaling the most shots she's taken in a match this season. Gaughan also notched four shots against Alabama A&M on Aug. 21.
- KSU is now 7-3-3 all-time in its conference openers and is 5-3-3 in its A-Sun Conference openers.
- Tonight's setback is just the third-ever loss for the Owls in a conference home opener as they move their all-time record to 7-3-1 in league home openers.
