David Durham ATHENS, Ga – The Kennesaw State men's tennis team opened its fall campaign at the Southern Intercollegiate Championships in Athens, Georgia. The tournament, which is hosted by UGA, is one of the most recognized tournaments in the nation.
Led by Director of Tennis
Eduardo Rincon, the Kennesaw State Owls finished the weekend with a 10-6 record in singles and compiled a 3-3 mark in doubles over some of the toughest opponents in the nation.
A pair of strong showing from
David Durham and
Drew Wendel highlighted a big opening weekend for the Owls.
Durham defeated Ruy Teixeira from Winthrop (6-4, 6-7, 2-0, ret) in the singles round of 32 and also teamed with
Drew Wendel in doubles to defeat A-Sun foe Lipscomb, 8-7(5) in the round of 64.
Wendel also has a strong showing at the SIC Tournament, defeating Robert Dudley out of Clemson (3-6, 7-6, 6-2) in the round of 32 in singles competition. The junior out of Lawrenceville, Georgia also competed with Durham in doubles.
Simon Pritchard, a junior who hails from Newport, Georgia, also competed over the weekend for the Owls. Pritchard defeated Ramon van Flymen out of Eastern Kentucky (7-3, 6-3), while also competing in doubles action in the opening weekend of play.
Rincon also saw sophomores
Manuel Castellanos and
Alejandro Valencia win single matches over Davidon and Georgia Tech, respectively, in the round of 64. Castellanos defeated J.B. Gough in two sets (6-2, 6-2), while Valencia defeated Casey Kay in two sets (6-4, 7-5) to represent the Owls at the SIC.
The Owls return to action on Sept. 25-27 at the Georgia Tech Invitational in Atlanta, Ga. Kennesaw State will compete in tournament play.
