KENNESAW, Ga. – In a back-and-forth physical battle, the Kennesaw State soccer team earned a 1-1 double overtime tie with Clayton State on Sunday night (Aug. 30) at Fifth Third Bank Stadium.
Â
Junior
Kim Fincher got the Owls on the board in the 28th minute of the opening half as she beat her defender down the right flank and finished through the legs of CSU goalkeeper Charlotte McCormack for her second goal of the season and the 1-0 KSU lead.
Â
Fincher would come inches from scoring twice more in regulation, but no second goal would come for the home team.
Â
The Lakers then evened up the score at 1-1 with just 15 minutes remaining in the second half when Iciar Duran sent a right flank cross into the six-yard box where Brooke Bortles finished with a header to the back of the net.
Â
With the match tied at 1-1 through 90 minutes of regulation play, the two teams headed to overtime. In the physical contest, which saw four yellow cards handed out, the Lakers went down to 10 players when Siobhan Wilson was shown a red card on a hard tackle of junior
Shannon Driscoll.
Â
Despite a number of scoring opportunities in the extra time, McCormack came up big as the score ended in a 1-1 double overtime draw.
Â
The Owls will now head on the road for five-straight matches, starting with a trip to Charleston, S.C., for the Charleston Cup next weekend, facing off against College of Charleston on Friday (Sept. 4) at 7 p.m. and The Citadel on Sunday (Sept. 6) at 2 p.m.

Quotables"It was a good game. It was one of those games where we again had a lot of chances early on in the game. They got back into it and got their goal. We still a couple of one v. ones with the keeper and you have to capitalize on those really good chances to put a team like that away. Clayton State is in the mix nationally in NCAA Division II and we expected a tough competition against them. "
