Ohio State ReleaseKENNESAW, Ga. –
Jay Moseley, who guided the Kennesaw State men's golf program to national prominence during his six seasons as head coach, has announced his resignation after accepting the head coaching position at The Ohio State University. Ohio State made the official announcement on Thursday (July 9).
Â
"Kennesaw State has been and always will be near and dear to my heart. I cannot express enough gratitude to my administrators- Dennis Stubblefield, Dave Waples,
Scott Whitlock and
Vaughn Williams for their belief in me," Moseley said. "The players that I have coached at Kennesaw State have been nothing short of amazing and I am so proud of each and every one of them.Â
Â
"Six years ago I was blessed with an incredible opportunity to be a head coach and now I have another great opportunity that I am very excited about," Moseley added. "Ohio State University is obviously rich in tradition and my wife, Kelly, and I are looking forward to this new chapter of our lives that await us in Columbus."
Â
In six seasons under Moseley's leadership, the Owls claimed the 2011 Atlantic Sun Conference title, appeared in five consecutive (2011-15) NCAA regionals and reached the NCAA Championships in 2011 and 2014. Additionally, Kennesaw State produced one All-American, six All-Southeast Region selections, two A-Sun Conference Players of the Year, three Scholar-Athletes of the Year, one Freshman of the Year, 14 all-conference picks and five all-freshman selections.
Â
"Kennesaw State is richer as an institution for having
Jay Moseley here for the last six years,"
Scott Whitlock, senior associate athletics director, said. "He approaches each day with a type of character and grace that few people possess. He has served as a living definition of the phrase 'role model' for the entire Owl Nation - and especially his players. He has shown all, who have taken time to notice, as to how one should go about being a collegiate coach in this era."
Â
Under Moseley's mentorship, the program's success was not limited to just the course as his student-athletes excelled in the classroom. In 2013, Ben Greene and Peder Lunde Hermansson were named Capital One CoSIDA Academic All-Americas, and this past spring
Jimmy Beck was voted to the Capital One Academic All-District Team. Additionally, nine student-athletes have been named to both the Cleveland/Srixon Golf All-America Scholar and A-Sun Conference All-Academic teams.
Â
In each of his first five seasons, Moseley's teams were recognized with the GCAA Team Academic Award that is presented nationally to teams who have a cumulative 3.0 or higher grade-point average. The Owls are expected to once again be honored this summer for their classroom performance during the 2014-15 academic year.
Â
"There is no question that Jay was an ultra-successful coach during his time here. That being said, the legacy that Jay leaves at KSU is not based upon his teams' championships and wins. He will be an 'Owl for Life' because of the positive impact that he had on every player, coach, administrator and person that he met during his time here."
Â
Over the course of the last five seasons, Kennesaw State has won 13 team titles, including a program-best five during the record-setting 2010-11 campaign. The Owls also produced 46 top five finishes, including 11 runner-up showings since the 2009-10 season.
Â
The 2015-16 season marked another year of firsts for the Owls under the leadership of Moseley as Kennesaw State appeared in the Golf Coaches Association of America (GCAA) poll's Top 25 for the first time in program history. KSU finished the year No. 27 in the final GCAA poll, No. 28 by Golfstat and No. 30 byÂ
Golfweek.
Â
Playing a competitive schedule, the Owls posted 11 top four finishes in 12 events, including victories at the Rees Jones Invitational and Pinetree Intercollegiate. KSU also had runner-up showings at the Jones Invitational and Atlantic Sun Conference Championships. Kennesaw State concluded the year with a sixth-place finish at the NCAA Chapel Hill Regional.
Â
The 2010-11 season represented the Kennesaw State program's first on the national stage as the Owls captured their first-ever A-Sun Conference crown, earned their first Division I postseason appearance and advanced to the NCAA Championships. The season was capped by Moseley being named A-Sun Conference Coach of the Year.
Jeff Karlsson became KSU's first All-American, earning second team recognition by the GCAA, and along with Matt Nagy, was named to the All-Southeast Region team.
A 2007 Auburn graduate, Moseley and his wife, Kelly, welcomed their first child, James Brown Moseley III, also known as Tripp, on June 2, 2015.
Â
"In my very biased opinion, Ohio State has just hired one of the nation's top young coaches (of any sport), but more importantly, they now have one of life's great people joining their staff," Whitlock said. "I am so very happy for Jay, Kelly and Tripp as they start this new chapter in their lives. They will be missed."
Â
A national search for the next Kennesaw State head men's golf coach will begin immediately.
