NCAA Championships CentralCHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The senior trio of
Jimmy Beck,
Kelby Burton and
Austin Vick led No. 24 Kennesaw State to a 2-under par 286 total during Friday's second round of the NCAA Chapel Hill Regional at the par-72, 7,242-yard UNC Finley Golf Course in Chapel Hill, N.C.
Paced by a 3-under par 69 from Vick, the Owls are currently tied with Florida for fourth place with a 3-under par 36-hole score of 573. Stanford, which posted a 13-under par 275, leads the 13-team field with an 11-over par total of 565, one shot better than Charlotte (566), which held the lead after the first round.
Top-ranked Florida State (570) is in third place and followed by Kennesaw State and Florida. The low five teams and the low individual not on those teams will advance to the finals that will be held May 29 – June 3, at The Concession Golf Club in Bradenton, Fla.
"I thought we had a chance to put up a really good number today," head coach
Jay Moseley said. "We had it at five or six under at one point today and didn't finish it off the way we needed to really separate us and put us in a better position. All-in-all, we shot another under par score and had our three seniors pick us up and play well today and that was a real key for us."
Vick got off to a solid start, posting birdies on three of his first six holes and finished his opening nine at 3-under par. He continued his solid play on the back nine with his only blemish being a bogey on the par-4 11th hole, and is tied for 32nd at 1-over par 145.
"I played really well today. I hit the ball well off the tee, a lot better than yesterday. I hit some great iron shots and putted pretty well," Vick said. "I only missed one green all day and that was pretty key to shooting the score I shot."
Beck, who opened the tournament with a 1-under 70, shot a 2-under 70 as he posted five birdies on the day and will head into Saturday's final round tied for seventh at 3-under par 141.
Burton also played well on the front side as he shot 2-under on his opening nine holes and moved to 3-under par through 13 holes before a stretch of three straight bogeys dropped him to even par after 16 holes. However, a birdie on the par-5 17th hole, got him to 1-under and a par on the 18th produced a 1-under par 71 and placed him in a tie for 22nd.
Back-to-back rounds of 68 has Western Carolina's J.T. Poston atop the individual leaderboard with an 8-under total of 136, one shot ahead of Stanford's Maverick McNealy (137), whose 67 was the low round of the day on Friday. Poston is playing in the regional as an individual.
Sophomore
Teremoana Beaucousin carded a 4-over par 76 and is tied for 66th, while freshman
Fredrik Nilehn (145) shot a 77 and is tied for 32nd.
"We know if we go out and play really well, we'll take care of business and if we don't play well we know we will be in a tight race," Moseley said. "We just have to focus on getting the job done, playing one shot at a time and staying patient. This team played really, really well the last round at regionals last year and I think we can use that experience to help us tomorrow.
"I think the guys are ready and, hopefully, we saved our best golf for tomorrow and I think a great number is out there for us," Moseley added.
Regional action concludes on Saturday (May 16) beginning at 7:50 a.m. (ET). The Owls will be grouped with Clemson and Florida and will tee off on hole No. 1.
Kennesaw State will be seeking its third finals appearance and second in a row. The Owls finished second at the Auburn Regional a year ago to advance to the national championships in Hutchinson, Kan.
