FRANKLIN, Tenn. – Kennesaw State senior
Kelby Burton fired a 4-under par 67 to take the first-round lead at the 14-team Mason Rudolph Championship that opened Friday (April 3) at the par-71, 7,100-yard Vanderbilt Legends Course in Franklin Tenn.
Burton's round helped Kennesaw State to a 1-under par 283 total and a tie for second place with No. 15 Georgia Tech in a field that includes eight teams ranked in Golfstat's Top 50. Host and No. 6 Vanderbilt holds the lead at 4-under par 280.
"I am very pleased with our first today. We have positioned ourselves well for the next two days of competition," Kennesaw State head coach
Jay Moseley said. "Conditions were not ideal today and it was very encouraging to see our guys grind out their rounds with the gusty winds."
The Owls senior recorded six birdies on his round, including two on his final two holes, and holds a one-shot lead over McCormick Clouser of Ball State and Scott Wolfes of Georgia Southern.
"Kelby's round was spectacular and he provided a great spark for us today," Moseley said.
