Kennesaw, Ga. – The Kennesaw State baseball team could not overcome four home runs, dropping a midweek showdown with non-conference foe Troy on Wednesday (April 22) evening, 6-2. The Owls (22-19) and Trojans (22-20) concluded their home-and-home series, splitting the two regular-season game with both teams winning on the road.
The Owls totaled eight hits in the game, as
Chris Erwin (3-for-5, one RBI),
Jeremy Howell (2-for-3) and
Colin Bennett (1-for-3, one RBI) lead KSU's offensive attack.
Grant Williams, who entered the game batting a team-high .336, finished 1-for-4 and
Kal Simmons chipped in going 1-for-5 in the contest.
After the teams traded scoreless at-bats in the first inning, both teams got on the board in the second frame.
The Trojans jumpstarted the scoring with a two-run home run, before the Owls responded with a solo homer off the bat of Bennett in the bottom half to jolt 753 fans at Stillwell Stadium, cutting Troy's lead in half to 2-1.
AJ Moore (2-2), who made his seventh start of the season, settled in after the second inning, allowing just five hits over four scoreless innings to keep the game within reach at 2-1. Moore finished the game allowing four runs on eight hits over 6.o innings, earning a hard-fought loss on the night. The righthander also struck out six in his outing.
Leading 2-1 entering the seventh, Troy hit three solo home runs to pull ahead 5-1. The first six runs between the two teams were all off home runs, hitting a total of five throughout the first 6.5 innings of play.
However, an RBI single off the bat of Erwin pulled the Owls within 5-2, scoring
Brennan Morgan –who walked earlier in the inning—from third base. The three-run deficit would be the closest KSU would get, as Troy worked two relievers out of the bullpen to back Ben Tidwell's (1-2) efforts on the mound to secure the win.
Brock Turner and
Cole McArthur made appearances out of the bullpen for the Owls. Turner allowed two runs on three hits over 2.0 innings. The righthander struck out two over his time on the hill.
Cole McArthur made his sixth appearance in the ninth inning, working a scoreless frame allowing just one hit.
Kennesaw State will return to Atlantic Sun Conference action this weekend, traveling to Nashville, Tennessee to take on Lipscomb in a three-game series. The Owls currently sit at 6-5 in the A-Sun, with the Bisons right behind at 5-4.
