KANNAPOLIS, N.C. – Kennesaw State freshman
Fredrik Nilehn completed a wire-to-wire finish atop the leaderboard, then won a three-hole playoff to capture individual medalist honors at the Irish Creek Intercollegiate that concluded Sunday (April 12) at the par-71, 7099-yard Irish Creek Golf Club.
Â
After posting a final-round 3-over par 74, Nilehn defeated Rigel Fernandes of South Florida and North Florida's Taylor Hanckock in the playoff. The Owls freshman and Hancock both birdied No. 7 to eliminate Fernandes, and after both scored pars on No. 8, Nilehn birdied No. 9 to win the individual title.
Â
Nilehn, who recorded rounds of 66-68-74 to post a 54-hole total of 5-under par 208, captured his second win of the season following a record-breaking victory at the Pinetree Intercollegiate in October.
Â
"I'm proud of Fredrik for earning his second collegiate win," Kennesaw State head coach
Jay Moseley said. "He didn't have his best stuff today, but he turned it around and hit some incredibly clutch shots in the playoff to win over two great players."
Â
Behind the play of Nilehn, the No. 26 Owls finished third in the 15-team event with a 4-over par score of 856, three shots behind No. 17 South Florida, which claimed the team title with a 1-over par 853. No. 24 North Florida (854) finished second.
Â
"Today was disappointing for our team. We did not perform to the best of our ability and it stings to know that we only ended up a few shots behind USF and UNF," Moseley said. "We have a week before conference so we are going to prepare a game plan to be ready to win."
Â
Kennesaw State posted its 19th top five finish in its 22 events dating back to the 2013-14 season and extend its streak of top four or better showings to 10.
Â
