Jimmy Beck opened with a 5-under par 65 and carded a 1-over par 71 in his second round to lead the No. 28 Kennesaw State men's golf team during Monday's opening day of The Cleveland Golf Palmetto Intercollegiate at the par-70, 6,617-yard par-70 Palmetto Golf Club in Aiken, S.C.
Beck has a 36-hole total of 4-under par 136 and is currently tied for 10th place, four shots off the lead that is held by Georgia Southern's Scott Wolfe, who holds a one-shot lead over Idaho's Aaron Cockerill. Wolfe finished the day at 8-under par 132.
Behind Beck's performance, the Owls are in fourth place with a 3-under par score of 557 after posting rounds of 278 and 279.
"We really hit the ball well today as a team. I don't think we lost any shots to anyone from tee to green," head coach
Jay Moseley said. "However, we just didn't convert enough birdie putts to really push ourselves up the leaderboard."
No. 8 South Carolina leads the 18-team field with a 14-under par score of 546 and is one shot ahead of No. 33 Clemson (547).
Sophomore
Teremoana Beaucousin, who earned Atlantic Sun Conference Player of the Week honors following a third-place finish at the Jones Invitational two weeks, ago is 14
th at 3-under par 137. After a first-round 2-under par 68, Beaucousin followed up with a 1-under 69 is one of nine individuals in the 90-player field to record two sub-par rounds.
Senior
Austin Vick (E, 140) is tied for 23rd, while freshman
Fredrik Nilehn (+4, 144) and senior
Kelby Burton (+9, 149) are tied for 46th and tied for 73rd, respectively.
"We are playing very well as a team so we are certainly capable of putting up a great number tomorrow (Tuesday)," Moseley said.
The Cleveland Golf Palmetto Intercollegiate concludes on Tuesday (Mar. 10) with a shotgun start beginning at 9:30 a.m. (ET).
