VALENCIA, Calif. – The Kennesaw State men's golf team received a career-best tying performance from sophomore Teremoana Beaucousin during Monday's opening day of the Jones Invitational hosted by Pepperdine at the par-72, 7,019-yard Valencia Country Club in Valencia, Calif.

Beaucousin opened with a 6-under par 66 to help the No. 22 Owls to a 36-hole total of 6-under par 571 and a second-place standing, five shots behind No. 4 USC. The Trojans finished the day at 11-under par 565 to lead the 15-team field.

Kennesaw State began the day by firing a 6-under par 282 before posting a 1-over par 289 in round two. USC posted rounds of 11-under 277 and even-par 288.

After tying his career-low 18-hole score in the first round, Beaucousin followed up with a 3-under 69 to finish play at 9-under par 135 and assume a three-shot lead over Winthrop's Zach Seabolt (-6, 138).

"I am really proud of the guys for staying patient all day during some various conditions," Kennesaw State head coach Jay Moseley said. "Teremoana played extremely well and he capitalized on his scoring opportunities today and Fredrik played solid as well."

In tying his career-low round, Beaucousin posted five birdies and concluded his first round with an eagle on the par-5 18th to finish with a 4-under 32 on the back nine. The KSU freshman previously shot a 66 during the second round of the 2014 Tar Heel Intercollegiate.

Freshman Fredrik Nilehn turned in rounds of 73 and 69 and is tied for eighth at 2-under par 142. Seniors Austin Vick (+2, 146) and Jimmy Beck (+4, 148) are tied for 22nd and 32nd, respectively, while redshirt senior Kelby Burton (+10, 154) is tied for 62nd.

"Our seniors didn't have their best stuff in the afternoon round but they are capable of playing great tomorrow," Moseley said. "We will get some good rest tonight and get ready to play well tomorrow."

Kennesaw State concludes the tournament on Tuesday (Feb. 24). The Owls are scheduled to begin their third round at noon (ET) and will be grouped with USC and Winthrop.
