It took the Owls an hour and twenty-two minutes to sweep the Highlanders in a quick three sets.
In the opening set, KSU raced out to an 11-4 lead behind three kills by
Liesl Engelbrecht. The Highlanders used a timeout, but it still didn't slow the Owls down as they built a lead as large as large as 13 points to take a 1-0 lead in the match.
The second set was closer early on, but Kennesaw State got a comfortable lead in the middle of the frame and didn't look back holding NJIT to 16 points in the second.
With the Owls leading 11-10 in the third and wanting to close the match out in three, KSU went on a 7-1 run to ensure the Highlanders didn't push this to four sets. NJIT made a run late to get within five, but Kennesaw State closed out the match on
Sydni Shelton's ninth kill of the match.
Tomorrow, Kennesaw State will face first place Lipscomb in the KSU Convocation Center at 7 p.m. Lipscomb is currently in first place of the A-Sun.
Coach Schunzel on Griffin's Game against NJIT"First of all, I want to thank everyone that had a hand in the first Griffin's Game to be such a success. I'm so happy we were able to bring in two incredible families and help them out a little bit. I was really pleased with our level of focus and execution in sets one and two tonight. Unfortunately, we let off the gas pedal a little bit in set three, but were able to close them out in set three for the sweep, which is a great thing. Tomorrow night is obviously a huge match, and I can guarantee you that Lipscomb will come into our gym with fire in their eyes. We have another great game plan and our team is excited for the challenge."
- Kennesaw State Head Coach Keith Schunzel Notes- The sweep against NJIT was the sixth straight-set win of the season for the Owls. KSU has two sweeps in the A-Sun and they both came against NJIT.
- As a team, Kennesaw State hit .300 against NJIT. It's the fifth time this season they have hit over .300 in a match.
-
Katarina Morton led the team with 10 digs tonight.
-
Rachel Taylor had a well-rounded match as she finished with five kills, four blocks and two digs.
