FORT MYERS, Fla. – The Kennesaw State soccer team dropped Sunday's matchup with Florida Gulf Coast, 1-0, at the FGCU Soccer Complex in an Atlantic Sun Conference showdown.
Sophomore goalkeeper
Ashley Zambetti totaled seven saves as the Eagles' offensive attack was early and often against the Owls, outshooting KSU 18-1 in the match. Zambetti held off FGCU's attack until the 82' minute mark when Tabby Tindell of Florida Gulf Coast scored the lone goal of the match.
The Owls (4-8-2, 1-2-1) only shot came in the 63' minute when sophomore
Ida Hepsoe fired a shot towards FGCU's goalkeeper but could not find the back of the netting. The Eagles (8-5-2, 3-0-1) totaled five players that recorded two or more shots towards Zambetti, but had trouble getting it past the Duluth, Georgia native for most of the game.
The Owls and Eagles battled to a scoreless match through the first 45 minutes of action. Even though FGCU outshot Kennesaw State, 7-0, in the first half, Zambetti's two saves kept the match an even 0-0 heading into the locker rooms.
The Eagles appeared to have struck first on the day in the 42' minute of play when Florida Gulf Coast fired from close that was quickly blocked away from Zambetti, but the Eagles found the back of the net on the rebound. However, an offside was called and kept the match deadlocked at 0-0 after the first 45 minutes of play.
The Owls will return to Fifth Third Bank Stadium next weekend when they will play host to North Florida (Oct. 16) at 2 p.m. on Friday afternoon before hosting Jacksonville (Oct. 18) at 3 p.m. as A-Sun action heats up.
