WBB: Owls Fly South for A-Sun Battle with Stetson

THE GAME:
The Kennesaw State women's basketball team continues its three-game Atlantic Sun Conference road swing as the Owls head south to Deland, Fla., for a Thursday (Jan. 22) night contest against 2014 A-Sun Conference Tournament runner-up Stetson at 7 p.m. ET in the Edmunds Center.

THE OPPONENT:
Stetson
The Hatters enter Thursday's contest with a 13-4 overall record and are 2-1 in league play. After dropping its conference opener to Florida Gulf Coast (57-55), Stetson has won its last two games over Jacksonville and North Florida, a 73-47 decision in its last outing on Saturday. The Hatters have four players averaging double figures, led by Amber Porter with 13.5 points per game and followed by Myeisha Hall (13.2ppg), Brianti Saunders (13.0ppg) and Jama Sharp (12.9ppg). Porter also pulls down a team-high 7.3 rebounds per game and leads the A-Sun in field goal percentage. As a team, the Hatters lead the conference in scoring defense, field goal percentage defense, three-point field goal percentage defense, steals and blocked shots, while ranking second in scoring offense, scoring margin and field goal percentage.

THE SERIES:
This will be the 22nd meeting between the Owls and the Hatters, with Stetson leading the all-time series, 18-3. Stetson took the last meeting in the series with a 73-56 win in the first round of the 2014 Atlantic Sun Conference Tournament on March 11, 2014 in Deland, Fla. Sophomore Aareon Smith paced the Owls with a career-high and game-high 18 points and four three-pointers, while classmate Deandrea Sawyers added 12 points on four three-pointers.

Last Meeting: STET won, 73-56, on March 11, 2014 in Deland, Fla., in the first round of the 2014 Atlantic Sun Conference Tournament.
 
LAST TIME OUT:
Sophomores Deandrea Sawyers and Aareon Smith led the Kennesaw State women's basketball team, but it was not enough as the Owls dropped their first Atlantic Sun Conference contest of the season, 79-61, to Lipscomb on Saturday evening (Jan. 17) at Allen Arena. Sawyers continued her dominance in conference play with a team-high 24 points and nine rebounds, while also draining five three-pointers in the process. It was her third-straight 20-point game and fourth of the season. Smith added 16 points on 7-of-12 shooting, while junior Jasmine McAllister chipped in nine points and eight rebounds.
 
NEXT UP:
The Owls will wrap their three-game conference road trip with a Saturday night contest against 2014 Atlantic Sun Conference regular season and tournament champion Florida Gulf Coast in Fort Myers, Fla., on Jan. 24. Tipoff is slated for 7:05 p.m. ET in Alico Arena.
 
NEWS AND NOTES:
A-Sun Start
The Owls are looking to win three of their first four Atlantic Sun Conference games for only the second time in program history and the first time since the 2008-09 season.
 
Road Warriors
KSU is 6-4 away from the friendly confines of the KSU Convocation Center, which leads the A-Sun for most road wins on the season.
 
Owls Taking Care of the Rock
KSU is averaging just 13.4 turnovers per game, coming in second in the league and 26th in the country in that category.
 
KSU Sharing the Ball
KSU has been sharing the ball well and has dished out the second-most assists in conference action with 43 helpers per game. The Owls are averaging 14.3 assists per game in league play.
 
Assist-to-Turnover Ratio
The Owls own the second-best assist-to-turnover ratio in the conference at 0.9 and have registered 222 helpers on 241 turnovers in 18 games this season.
 
Owls on the Boards
KSU is leading the conference in rebounding margin in both overall play (+2.5) and A-Sun action (+5.0) and is holding its opponents to just 33.3 rebounds per contest in conference action and 37.2 rebounds per game in overall play, to rank first and second respectively.
 
Scoring Sawyers
Sophomore Deandrea Sawyers is leading the A-Sun in scoring in both overall action (16.2ppg) and conference play (23.7ppg) and has started the conference slate with three-straight 20-point contests.
 
Career Highs
Sawyers set a career-high with 26 points, including four three-pointers against the Norse on Jan. 14, before following that performance up with 24 points, including five treys in a road loss at Lipscomb on Saturday. The sophomore also equaled her career-high with nine rebounds against the Bisons.
 
McAllister Leading Owls
Junior Jasmine McAllister ranks second in the conference in rebounding and third in scoring with 14.1 points and 10.7 rebounds per game, while also ranking third in the A-Sun with a 50.3 percent clip from the field.
 
McAllister on the Boards
McAllister's 10.7 boards ranks 22nd in the NCAA, while the junior also leads the A-Sun and ranks 25th in the country with 4.2 offensive rebounds per game. On the season, she has grabbed 193 boards, with 70 coming on the offensive end of the court.
 
Three-Point Sawyers
Sawyers is the co-leader in the A-Sun with 12 three-pointers in conference play and has connected on the second-most three pointers in the conference in overall action with 43 treys on the season. She is averaging 2.4 three-pointers per game, which also ranks second in the A-Sun in that category.
 
Wells Assist-to-Turnover Ratio
Senior Kristina Wells owns the second-best conference assist-to-turnover ratio and is 17th in the nation with a 2.6 ratio with 67 assists and just 26 turnovers in 636 minutes this season, the third-most minutes played in the A-Sun behind junior Karly Frye and Sawyers.
 
Wells Handing out the Helpers
Wells leads the Owls and is third in the conference with 3.7 assists per game, while Frye owns 62 helpers to rank fifth in the league with 3.4 assists per game.
