BOX SCORE (XML) | BOX SCORE (PDF)LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. – The Kennesaw State baseball team played one of its cleanest games of the season at Coolray Field on Tuesday night, bringing the Owls their eighth straight win and second this season over Georgia, 3-1.
The Owls knocked eight hits at the plate while striking out nine from the mound to go with a clean game in the field as KSU completed the season sweep over the Bulldogs. KSU moves to 22-20 with the midweek victory while handing UGA its fifth straight loss, sinking the Bulldogs to 21-19-1.
The Owls grabbed the lead in the top of the first as
Max Pentecost extended his hit streak to 23 games with an RBI single through the right side. Pentecost scored
Jacob Bruce who collected his eighth hit in as many games before stealing second, his 10
th stolen bag of the year, and heading home for the 1-0 KSU lead.
In the top of the second the Owls tagged on two more runs to their lead as
Dylan Ivey got things going with a single followed by
Kal Simmons reaching on a fielding error. Bruce then sent his second hit of the night to right field, scoring Ivey, with Pentecost sending his Atlantic Sun Conference leading 16
th double of the year down the left field-line, bringing in Bruce for a 3-0 Owl lead.
Georgia managed to make it a two-run ballgame in the bottom of the seventh, scoring its lone run after an RBI single from Stephen Wrenn, setting the score at 3-1.
Justin McCalvin then closed the door on the Bulldogs, earning his eighth save of the season with a 1.1 inning outing in which he struck out two and picked off one.
Pacing the Owls on the offensive end was Pentecost, going 2-for-3 with two RBIs and a walk while Bruce picked up two hits as well, scoring two of the three KSU runs.
Freshman
Chris Erwin got the win on the hill, improving to 3-1 on the year with a three inning outing allowing just two hits. Erwin was replaced by fellow rookie
Gabe Friese who lasted 3.1 innings with one hit allowed and five strikeouts.
KSU played clutch defense behind its pitching, costing Georgia 10 runners left on the base paths.
The Owls return home this Friday, April 22, for a 6 p.m. ET contest with Atlantic Sun Conference for East Tennessee State, starting off a three-game weekend series for KSU.
