THE OPPONENT:Alabama A&MThe Bulldogs enter Monday's match-up winless in 2014-15 with a 0-10 record, including a 71-47 setback to Ole Miss in their last outing on Dec. 20. The Bulldogs are led by Brittney Strickland, who is averaging 14.2 points per game, while also leading the team in assists, rebounds and three-pointers. Junior college transfer Janie Myles has only played in three games for the Bulldogs, but has made an immediate impact and is averaging 19.7 points per contest. AAMU is shooting at a 34.3 percent clip from the field, while its opponents are making 45.8 percent of its shots. The Bulldogs are shooting 71.6 percent mark from the charity stripe and are averaging 13.1 free throws per contest.
THE SERIES:This will be the second meeting between the Owls and the Bulldogs, with KSU leading the series 1-0 after earning an 83-79 win over AAMU in last season's meeting on Dec. 29, 2013 in Kennesaw. Deandrea Sawyers drilled a three-pointer from the corner to lift the Owls to a 61-60 victory over Big East foe Xavier on Monday (Dec. 22) afternoon in the KSU Convocation Center. The Owls put together balanced scoring in the win as six players posted eight points or more in the win, led by junior
Karly Frye, who registered 12 points, including a 3-of-4 mark from beyond the arc. Senior
Kristina Wells, who earlier in the day had been named the Atlantic Sun Conference Player of the Week, added 11 points, seven rebounds, five assists and three assists.
NEXT UP:The Owls return to the Convocation Center for a two-game home swing to close out non-conference action, beginning with a 7 p.m. ET game against Florida A&M on Friday, Jan. in the Convocation Center.
NEWS AND NOTES:Best Start in over a Decade…With 10 wins in the first 12 games, the Owls are off to their best start in the Division I era and the best since the 2000-01 season when KSU opened its campaign with 13 wins in its first 15 contests.
Seven-Game Win StreakWith its win on Saturday, KSU has won seven consecutive games for the first time in the Division I era and first time since the 2001-02 season, when the Owls put together an eight-game winning streak with wins over Clayton State, USC Spartanburg, Lander, Armstrong Atlantic, Columbus State, Francis Marion, Augusta State and GC&SU.
A-Sun Player of the WeekSenior
Kristina Wells earned her first Atlantic Sun Conference Player of the Week honor on Monday after averaging a double-double over the week with 17.5 points and 11.5 rebounds, while shooting at a 54.5 percent clip from the field and connecting on 11-of-13 free throws. She also totaled seven assists, three blocks and two steals, while only committing two turnovers in 80 minutes of play in wins over Mercer and Gardner-Webb.
Owls Racking Up A-Sun HonorsFor the fifth-consecutive week, the Owls took home A-Sun Conference weekly honors after Wells earned her first Player of the Week accolade last Monday. Sophomore
Deandrea Sawyers earned her first-career Player of the Week on Dec. 8, while junior
Jasmine McAllister has been named Newcomer of the Week accolades three times this season.
McAllister Leading the WayMcAllister leads in both scoring and rebounding, pacing the A-Sun with 15.1 points and 11.9 rebounds per game, while also ranking third in the conference with a 49.6 percent clip from the field.
Jas on the BoardsMcAllister's league-leading 11.6 boards ranks 11th in the NCAA and she is also leading the A-Sun and ranks sixth in the nation with 5.1 offensive boards per game. On the season, she has pulled down 143 rebounds, with 61 of those coming on the offensive end of the court.
BoardsMcAllister has registered 10 or more rebounds on 10 occasions this season, which leads the conference, while Wells ranks in a tie for fourth with four outings with 10 or more boards.
Double-DoublesMcAllister has also registered eight double-doubles on the season, which leads the A-Sun and ranks third in the NCAA.
Owl ScoringAlong with McAllister, the Owls have four players in the top-23 in scoring in the A-Sun. Joining the junior are Sawyers (15.0 ppg, second), Wells (12.2 ppg, 16th) and redshirt-senior
Breonna Mosely (9.3 ppg, 23rd).
Owl ReboundingThe quartet also ranks in the top-15 in the conference in rebounding with McAllister leading the way, followed by Wells (8.5 rpg, t-fourth), Mosely (5.7 rpg, 11th) and Sawyers (4.8 rpg, t-15th).
Dishing out the HelpersJunior
Karly Frye is averaging 3.6 assists per game, ranking her second in the conference and has dished out 43 helpers on the year. Wells adds 3.1 assists per game to sit seventh in the league and has 37 helpers on the year.
Assist-to-Turnover RatioWells ranks second in the conference and 40th in the nation in assist-to-turnover ratio, owning a 2.3 ratio with 37 assists and 16 turnovers on the season.
