NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Kennesaw State volleyball team dropped its final Atlantic Sun match of the season to the Lipscomb Bisons in four sets (30-28, 21-25, 20-25, 21-25).
Â
"The thing I'll remember most about our team this year is how hard we fought no matter what situation we were in," head coach
Keith Schunzel said. "Today, we came into the match against the best team in the league knowing we weren't in the conference tournament and played very well, focused and energetic, but just came up short. The players on our team and our staff need to keep developing our skills, training hard and improving so that some day, we can be in the position that Lipscomb was in tonight celebrating a conference championship. We have a fantastic group of players returning as well as a big time recruiting class and there is no doubt in my mind that we will be better next year when we get back into A-Sun play. We have one more chance to put on the Kennesaw State jersey, which we put a lot of pride in. We'll play our hearts out and try to win the match."
Â
Kristi Piedimonte collected 37 assists and nine digs.
Â
Kelly Marcinek and
Anaiah Boyer both had 11 kills.
Rachel Taylor added nine kills hitting .389.
Â
Katarina Morton led the team with 24 digs.
Â
The Owls came out of the locker room playing hard and matched Lipscomb point for point early. The Bisons built a lead at 14-11, but the Owls responded with a 6-2 run behind two kills each from Taylor and Marcinek to force LU to take a timeout. The Owls extended their lead and had two set points leading 24-22, but Lipscomb fought back to tie the score at 24. Then it was the Owls turn to fend off three set points before they won the set 30-28.
Â
After winning the first set, KSU carried that momentum into the second building a 10-7 lead, but Lipscomb came back to tie it at 11. LU then went on a 4-1 run of there own forcing KSU to take a timeout. The Owls came out of the timeout with a 3-0 run, but couldn't slow down the Bisons from there as they won the second set 25-21.
Â
In the third set, Lipscomb took an early lead and Kennesaw State battled back to take a 14-13 lead. With the teams tied at 15, LU went on a 7-0 run and went on to go up 2-1 in the match after clinching the set 25-20.
Â
Lipscomb clinched the match and the regular season Atlantic Sun title with a 25-21 fourth set win.
