KENNESAW, Ga. – In a hard-fought and competitive Atlantic Sun Conference match between the Kennesaw State soccer team and Florida Gulf Coast, a Eagles took the 2-1 overtime victory on a goal in the 92nd minute of play on sun-filled Sunday afternoon (Oct. 5) at Fifth Third Bank Stadium.
Â
"It was a great game," said head coach
Rob King. "If you were a neutral watching it, you would have been entertained. There were chances on both ends for each team to win it in regulation. Overall I am very pleased. We dominated the second half. We had a lot of fight about us. We created a number of chances in the second half and we could have put them away with a couple of pretty good opportunities we created. We were disappointed that we did not put the game away in regulation and overtime is always difficult to lose, because one good opportunity that is put away ends the game. It ends very quickly and there is nothing you can do about it after that. But, overall we were very pleased. The team is coming together. FGCU is the team that has dominated our conference for the last few years and there is nothing between either of us, so pleased with where our young group is."
Â
In a tightly contested first half of play, the Eagles (10-3, 3-0) capitalized on a KSU (4-8-1, 1-2-0) misstep to take a 1-0 advantage in the 18th minute as Shannen Wacker won the ball from a KSU defender and dribbled toward the goal before finding Tabby Tindell, whose shot deflected off of another Owl defender and into the right side of the goal.
Â
Out of intermission, the Owls pushed ahead and gained much of the possession in the second half. Freshman
Marit Sandtroeen provided the equalizer in the 63rd minute for her third career goal as an Owl. Following a shot from redshirt-senior
Alma Gardarsdottir that was saved by FGCU goalkeeper Brittany Brown, Sandtroeen collected the rebound and finished into the right side of the goal.
Â
KSU continued pressure as Gardarsdottir and the Owl offense came close in notching the game-winner in regulation, but with neither getting a score the match entered extra time.
Â
Just two minutes into overtime, the Eagles' Ali Rogers netted the game-winner off of a corner kick service from Melissa Arnold to send FGCU to the 2-1 win.
Â
The Owls registered nine shots, with Gardarsdottir and redshirt-sophomore
Brittney Reed each tallying three shots, including two on frame in the match.
Â
Freshman goalkeeper
Mady Carter collected four saves in the setback, while Brown also totaled four saves for the Eagles.
Â
Paulina Speckmaier recorded seven shots, but only one on goal, for FGCU.
Â
The Owls next opens a three-match road trip, first traveling to Jacksonville, Fla., for a pair of league contests. KSU will start its road weekend with a 7 p.m. ET match against Jacksonville on Friday, Oct. 10, followed by a 1 p.m. match against North Florida on Sunday, Oct. 12.
