JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The historic first season in Kennesaw State lacrosse annals came to a close as the Owls fell 23-3 to No. 1 seed and regular-season champion Jacksonville in the semifinals of the Atlantic Sun Conference Championship Tournament Friday at Southern Oak Stadium in Jacksonville.
The more experienced and deeper Dolphins (12-5) took control from the outset and were never threatened in defeating the Owls (1-10) for the second time this season.
Kennesaw State was held scoreless in the first half and trailed 17-0 at halftime before finally breaking through when freshman
Kylar Ferguson (Marietta, Ga. / Sprayberry HS) scored her second goal of the season on a free position shot with 24:32 remaining. Freshman
Taylor Southerland (Acworth, Ga. / Harrison HS) scored her sixth goal of the season two minutes later.
A-Sun Conference Co-Freshman of the Year
Senneca Ward (Peachtree City, Ga. / McIntosh HS), tallied the Owls’ final goal, scoring with 7:08 remaining to extend her streak of consecutive games with a goal to seven. It also was her team-leading 20th goal of the season and increased her season point total to 26.
Freshman goalie Beth Cochran (Marietta, Ga. / Lassiter HS) played every minute in goal for Kennesaw State.
Head coach Kristina Llanes and her team will focus their attention to the 2014 season when they welcome 13 newcomers to the program.
Kennesaw State is celebrating 30 years of intercollegiate athletics during the 2012-13 academic year.
