LLANES INTERVIEW
ROCK HILL, S.C. – Junior
Emily Collins (Snellville, Ga. / Decatur HS) and freshman
Senneca Ward (Peachtree City, Ga. / McIntosh HS) scored three goals apiece to lead the Kennesaw State lacrosse team as it fell 22-8 to Winthrop at Eagle Field on Friday.
Collins finished with five points, while Ward recorded four points for the Owls (0-5).
With the score tied 1-1, the Eagles (5-4) scored eight of the game’s next 10 goals to build a 9-3 advantage with 10:15 remaining in the first half. Winthrop went on to take a 15-5 halftime lead as it outshot Kennesaw State, 30-12 in the first half.
“I definitely think the time off with Spring Break hurt us,” head coach Kristina Llanes said. “We mentally weren’t prepared to execute today. We lost our focus a lot.
“They (Eagles) maintained possession of the ball very well. Coach (John) Sung’s offense is very sharp in terms of its set skills. That definitely allowed them to create opportunities for each other on the crease,” Llanes added.
Winthrop was led by the duo of Sharon Gallagher and Megan Wallenhorst, who totaled 11 and 10 points, respectively. Gallagher had seven goals and three assists, while Wallenhorst contributed six goals and four assists.
Kennesaw State also had a productive duo of its own in Collins and Ward. The two combined for six of the Owls’ eight goals, and assisted three those scores. Freshmen
Kylar Ferguson (Marietta, Ga. / Sprayberry HS) and
Taylor Southerland (Acworth, Ga. / Harrison HS) rounded out the scoring for the Owls.
Another bright spot for Kennesaw State was the play of freshman goalie
Beth Cochran (Marietta, Ga. / Lassiter HS), who faced 43 shots and recorded a career-high 13 saves.
“She (Beth) did well for us today. She was patient in the crease today, which is something we’ve been working on a lot,” Llanes said. “She was a leader on the defensive end today.”
Kennesaw State returns to action on Friday (Mar. 22) when they travel to Clinton, S.C. to take on Presbyterian beginning at 6 p.m.
