DAVIDSON, N.C. – An improved defensive effort, and back-to-back goals by
Arielle Schmidt (Marietta, Ga. / Sprayberry HS) and
Taylor Southerland (Acworth, Ga. / Harrison HS), were not enough as Kennesaw State (0-3) fell to Davidson College (1-1), 20-2, Monday night at Richardson Stadium.
Despite the loss, the Owls squad gave the best performance of the season thus far, limiting quick goals, and transitioning well throughout the duration of the game.
“It was definitely a strong defensive effort tonight even though the outcome wasn’t what we wanted,” head coach Kristina Llanes said. “We fixed a lot of things that went wrong in the previous game against Campbell, and we are moving forward.”
Down 11-0 at the break, KSU came out strong to start the second half.
A quick Davidson foul led to a free position for Schmidt who shot the ball into the back of the net putting the Owls on the board less than two minutes into the period.
Southerland scored the Owls’ second goal less than two minutes later following an assist from
Emily Collins (Snellville, Ga. / Decatur HS).
“We are seeing more options,” Llanes added. “We are providing more support in transition, and that is going to help us progress towards our offensive third”
The momentum the Owls attack provided was short lived, however, as Davidson countered with two quick goals to increase its lead to 13-2.
Kennesaw State will take the progress made from Monday’s game and hope to build upon it when it plays its inaugural home game Saturday at Fifth Third Bank Stadium beginning at 1 p.m.
“We’re ready to play our first home game,” Llanes said. “They are ready to have a home crowd and to play in front of our fans and their families.”
Kennesaw State is celebrating 30 years of intercollegiate athletics during the 2012-13 academic year.
