BUIES CREEK, N.C. – Despite another two goal performance from freshman Senneca Ward (Peachtree City, Ga. / McIntosh HS), the first-year Kennesaw State lacrosse team was unable to overcome a quick start by Campbell and fell 21-4 to the Camels in their program debut at Barker-Lane Stadium on Saturday in Buies Creek, N.C.

With Campbell (1-0) leading 7-0 eight minutes into the game, the Owls (0-2) looked poised to jump-start their offense as Ward tallied two unassisted goals within five minutes to bring the score to 8-2.

“Senneca is definitely someone we lean to on our offensive end,” head coach Kristina Llanes said, “She is an all around solid player, and as a true freshman that is only going to get stronger as her career continues.”

Kennesaw State was limited to five shots on goal in the first half, with Ward scoring the only points during the opening period.

The adjustments the Owls made at the break showed, as a stronger defense took the field and they held the Camels to only 11 shots on goal.

Kennesaw State’s offense also showed signs of improvement as junior Emily Collins (Snellville, Ga./ Decatur HS) and freshman Taylor Southerland (Acworth, Ga. / Harrison HS) added second-half goals.

Although the Owls came up short, the additional game experience will aid the team’s growth.

“It’s all about hard work, and getting back out there and learning from the experience,” Llanes said.

The Owls’ two-game road trip concludes on Monday (Feb. 25) when it travels to Davidson, N.C. to take on Davidson (0-1) at 6 p.m. (ET).

Kennesaw State then returns home to prepare for its first-ever game at Fifth Third Bank Stadium. The Owls will host Coastal Carolina on Saturday (Mar. 2) at 1 p.m. (ET).

Kennesaw State is celebrating 30 years of intercollegiate athletics during the 2012-13 academic year.
