KENNESAW, Ga. – Even with a second consecutive double-double performance from senior
Emily Bean, the Kennesaw State volleyball team couldn't hold back a surging Jacksonville, falling to the Dolphins in four, 3-1 (23-25, 25-20, 25-21, 25-17).
Â
Bean went off for 13 digs and 12 kills during the outing, which was the first ever ESPN3 featured volleyball game held in the KSU Convocation Center. The Owls now sit at 6-9 overall and 1-4 in the Atlantic Sun Conference after losing the league game to 13-2, 4-1 Jacksonville.
Â
The Owls looked stellar in the first set, coming out to a 10-5 lead after back-to-back kills from Bean to set the Owls ahead. A pair of 3-0 runs from the Dolphins then tied it up at 16 before a KSU attack error gave the set to the Dolphins at 25-23.
Â
KSU led just once in the second set at 9-8 thanks to a
Toure Hopkins service ace to put the Owls up by one. JU regained the momentum, however, after rattling off three straight points to set the score at 12-10. Five straight from Jacksonville then put the set out of reach as the visitors took it, 25-10.
Â
Despite trailing in the early portions of the third the Owls made it their lone set win of the match after picking up five straight to go up 13-7, capitalizing on four Dolphin errors. JU fought back to within one point at 19-18, but it was KSU that came out on top as
Cierra Royster slammed the set winner, 25-21.
Â
It was then all Jacksonville in the fourth as the Dolphins picked up on a 10-1 run to put things out of reach, ending the set and the match with the 25-17 win.
Â
Bean led the Owls in both kills and digs, the first time this season a Kennesaw State player has done so, to go with her .267 attack percentage and two blocks.
Â
Royster and
Keyaira Stevenson each finished in double-figure kills with 10 while Hopkins earned seven.
Â
Setter
Sara Metroka put up 41 assists during the effort while Royster came up with five blocks.
Â
The Owls will be back on the court tomorrow as they play host to the Ospreys of North Florida. First serve is set for 3 p.m. ET in the Convocation Center.
