NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Sophomore guard
Delbert Love scored a team-high 20 points and senior forward
Aaron Anderson added 14 points and 13 rebounds for his seventh double-double of the season, but Kennesaw State was unable to pull out a victory as it fell 79-72 in overtime to Lipscomb in an Atlantic Sun Conference game Thursday at Allen Arena in Nashville, Tenn.
After freshman guard
Yonel Brown hit a three-pointer to give the Owls (2-18, 1-7) a 64-63 lead a minute into overtime, the Bisons (8-11, 3-5) went on a 10-0 run to take a 73-64 advantage with 1:50 remaining and held on for the win.
Kennesaw State had an opportunity to win the game in regulation, but Brown’s attempt for a game-winner with seven seconds remaining was off the mark and sent the game in to overtime.
The Owls held a 61-59 lead following a layup by freshman guard
Myles Hamilton with 1:01 remaining in regulation before the Bisons tied the score on two free throws by sophomore forward Malcolm Smith with 27 seconds remaining. Smith led all players with 21 points.
Sophomore guard Carter Sanderson and freshman center Stephen Hurt contributed 15 and 12 points, respectively, for Lipscomb.
Kennesaw State, which suited just nine players for the game, used an 11-4 run to open the second half and take a 41-40 lead at the 15:29 mark after trailing 36-30 at halftime. It marked the Owls’ first lead since a minute into the game.
The two teams exchanged leads 11 times and the score was tied on seven occasions in the second half despite several Kennesaw State players in foul trouble and the Owls making just seven of 15 shots from the free throw line over the final 20 minutes of regulation. KSU finished the game 14-for-25 (56.0 percent) from the charity stripe.
The combination of a difficult night at the foul line and a distinct size disadvantage along the front line hurt Kennesaw State as it was outrebounded, 45-32.
Kennesaw State returns to action on Saturday when it travels to Highland Heights, Ky., to take on Northern Kentucky beginning at 7 p.m. (ET).
