WINTER PARK, Fla. - The men's tennis team snapped a three-game slide by downing Niagara University today on the campus of Rollins College, downing the Purple Eagles by a score of 5-2. The Owls (6-6) were led by their freshmen, who all saw action on the day and all went undefeated.
In the doubles, the Owls were finally able to get back on track, led by the all-freshmen pairing of
Matthew Johnson and
Alex Toliver, who were playing together for the first time. In a back-and-forth affair, Johnson served for the match at 8-7 and dominated the Eagle duo with some clutch serving to win at No. 3, 9-7. Shortly after their victory, the team of junior
Gokalp Ozdemir and freshman
Louis Theodor finished off the doubles point for the Owls, closing out their match at No. 2 doubles, 8-6.
The singles was also dominated by the Owl freshmen, who raced to victories at No. 1, No. 2 and No. 6 to put the match out of reach for the Purple Eagles (1-3). Toliver easily handled business at No. 1 with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Joe Zelic. Theodor downed previously-undefeated David Raymond at No. 2, 6-4, 6-3, and classmate Alexander Pena kept the freshmen perfect on the day with a 6-1, 7-5 win over David Lemieux-Sarrasin at No. 6. The Owls would drop the next two singles matches which were completed, before Ozdemir, who was celebrating his 22nd birthday, would come from behind for a three-set victory over Brandon Gallegos at No. 4. Ozdemir trailed 8-4 in the deciding tiebreaker before rattling off six straight points.
"I am so impressed by the composure of our freshmen class in this match," indicated Owls Head Coach #T.J. Greggs#. "We're asking a lot of our freshmen, especially having two of them playing in the top two spots. They continue to show that the future of this program is very bright."
The Owls will return to the courts tomorrow for a 3:00 p.m. affair with St. Joseph's University at Rollins College. To follow the Owls on their Florida swing, follow Coach Greggs on Twitter by following @KSUTennisCoach.
