Men's Tennis Falls to Belmont, 6-1

Kubin and Janik/Browder pick up wins for Owls

3/24/2012 6:40:00 PM

MARIETTA, Ga. - After an exciting doubles point swung the way of the Belmont Bruins (6-9, 3-0 Atlantic Sun Conference), the Kennesaw State Owls (7-8, 0-3 A-Sun) were unable to regain the momentum in singles and fell, 6-1, to the first place team in the conference.

In the doubles, the Bruins struck first with a quick 8-3 win at No. 2 doubles, while the remaining matches both would be decided in lengthy tiebreaks.  At No. 1 doubles, each team successfully held serve 8 times to bring the match to the tiebreak, with the team of Michael Browder and Simon Janik finally downing the Bruins, 9-8(7).  At No. 3 doubles, however, the Bruins would be the team to come out on top of a long match, finally downing the duo of Matthew Johnson and Alex Toliver by a score of 9-8(8).  Both teams held match points in the tiebreaker, but ultimately the Bruins would win the match and the doubles point with an overhead at 9-8.

"Getting the doubles point would have made a huge difference today in this match," commented Owls Head Coach #T.J. Greggs#, "There is such a different mental state between knowing you need to split the singles matches and knowing you need to win four.  We fought very hard today, and that's all you can ask of your team when all is said and done."

The singles were a more routine affair for the Bruins, as they quickly put away three of the matches to ultimately decide the match as Bruin senior Rodrigo Amaral defeated Owl freshman Louis Theodor 6-4, 6-3 at the No. 3 spot for the fourth and deciding point.  Owl freshman Alex Toliver made a run at an upset at the No. 1 spot, but eventually fell to another Bruin senior in Renato Antun, who defeated Toliver 6-4, 1-6, 6-1.  The lone victory for the Owls was at No. 6, where junior Gianni Kubin was victorious over Belmont's Bruno Silva, 6-7(4), 6-1, 1-0(6).

The Owls will look for their first conference win tomorrow as they face off with Lipscomb at 9:00 a.m. at the Fair Oaks Tennis Center.  The match is a makeup match from Friday, when the two teams were postponed due to weather.
