DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - The men's tennis team fell to 7-7 with a 5-0 blanking by the Bethune Cookman University Wildcats (7-6). It was the first win for Bethune Cookman in the short history between the two programs, with the Owls taking the first two contests by identical 5-2 scores in 2009 and 2010.
The Owls again struggled in doubles, with the team of
Alex Toliver and
Matthew Johnson being the only team able to pull off the win against the Wildcat duo of Gilbert Kibet and Diego Garavito, 8-4. The Owls played without freshman Louis Theodor, who sat out the match with an injury.
In the singles, the Owls dropped two three-set matches, as
Gokalp Ozdemir and
Gianni Kubin both fell to their Wildcat opponents in lengthy matches. The match between Alexander Pena and Garavito was heading into a third set when heavy rains washed out the final two matches of the day, with the WIldcats already having secured the 5-0 victory.
"I honestly can't think of anything constructive to say right now about our level of play today," lamented Owls Head Coach #T.J. Greggs#. "BCU played a strong match, and we didn't. It's really as simple as that. If we want to have a chance at making an impact this season, some of our players are going to need to step up their intensity. It's tough to win when not everyone is giving 100%."
The Owls will take two weeks off before returning to Atlantic Sun Conference play with a homestand against Lipscomb and Belmont on March 23 and 24, respectively.
