CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. - The men's tennis team (5-4) saw their brief two-match winning streak halted today at the Champions Club Tennis Center as they fell to the host Chattanooga Mocs (7-2) by a score of 6-1. Chattanooga swept the doubles from the Owls, before winning five of six singles in close contests.
The doubles woes for the Owls continued, as the team now stands at 9-18 in the spring in doubles, compared to a record of 31-22 in singles. The closest the Owls would come to a win would be at No. 3 doubles, where the pair of
Simon Janik and Alexander Pena raced to a 4-0 lead before Chattanooga stormed back for an 8-6 win.
"We're not doing the right things on the doubles court," lamented Owls Head Coach #T.J. Greggs#. "We continue to go back to bad habits out there and get too defensive, and you can't win doubles at the DIvision I level by sitting back and hoping for mistakes."
In the singles, the Owls were handed several narrow defeats. The lone winner for the Owls was senior captain
Simon Janik, who handled Chattanooga's Ankit Chopra by a score of 7-5, 6-4 at the No. 3 singles spot. Additionally,
Alex Toliver and
Gokalp Ozdemir both stretched their opponents to three sets before falling at the No. 1 and No. 5 spots, respectively. Ozdemir's match was the longest of the day, ending nearly 45 minutes after the next-to-last match was complete. Ozdemir saved 7 match points before finally falling, 6-4, 6-7(8), 1-0(6) to Jackson Tresnan of the Mocs.
The Owls will return to action on Thursday when they travel to Florida Gulf Coast University to begin their Atlantic Sun Conference schedule. The Owls and Eagles had one of the most thrilling matches of the season a year ago, with the Owls coming out on top, 4-3. First serve is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. as the teams face off on the first ever night match for the Owls.
