CLINTON, S.C. - The men's tennis team shocked the Presbyterian College Blue Hose (4-4) by rallying for a convincing 5-2 win, reversing the score from a year ago. After dropping the doubles point despite holding match points in two of the matches, the Owls (4-3) responded by running through the first sets in all six singles matches to snatch the momentum and coast to victory.
Playing without doubles stalwart
Michael Browder, the Owls were forced to juggle their doubles lineup, but both new pairings were defeated in tiebreakers.
"I'll be honest, I was worried after the doubles," commented a relieved Owls Head Coach #T.J. Greggs#. "We just couldn't catch a break out there in doubles. We started slow, rebounded well, but just didn't quite get over the hump."
In the singles, all six Owls raced to quick first-set wins, to the chagrin of a shell-shocked Blue Hose squad. Freshman
Louis Theodor was the first to close out his opponent, dominating Rafael Berghaus, 6-1, 6-1. Soon to follow after were teammates Alexander Pena and
Simon Janik, giving the Owls a 3-1 advantage. The home team made things interesting by keeping their second sets close at the No. 4 and No. 5 spot, but the Owls prevailed, with
Gokalp Ozdemir and
Gianni Kubin both fighting back from a break down to close out their matches in straight sets.
"I was extremely proud of Gianni and Gokalp
today," continued Greggs. "They both picked up wins against very solid opponents, and are finally performing at the level I knew they could. This was our best team performance of the season. If we can perform like this during conference season, we are going to surprise some teams."
The Owls will return to the court
tomorrow when they take on Georgia Southern on the campus of the Eagles. First serve will be at noon.
