Owls Men's Tennis Falls to .500

7-0 loss to Troy University drops Owls to 3-3

2/12/2012 9:47:00 PM

TROY, Ala. - The Kennesaw State men's tennis team came within two points of winning the doubles point today at the campus of the Troy Trojans (1-4), but were unable to take a set from the Trojans in singles in a 7-0 loss.  The loss drops the Owls to 3-3 on the season.

In the doubles, Troy's No.1 and No. 2 singles players paired up at the No. 3 doubles spot, and ran to an easy victory over the first-time pairing of Michael Browder and Louis Theodor, 8-3.  At the top two spots, the Owls were within two points of victory in both matches, but neither would fall the way of the visiting team.  At No. 1, the longtime doubles pairing of Gokalp Ozdemir and Gianni Kubin led 7-5, before letting the next four games slip away in a 9-7 loss.  At No. 3 doubles, Simon Janik and Alex Toliver fought off three match points to take their match into a tiebreaker, before dropping a 9-8(7) decision.

"Losing the doubles point killed us today," commented Head Coach #T.J. Greggs#.  "We just lost all of our energy after that, and then had two players unable to play their singles matches, so the air kind of went out of the team at that point."

In the singles, both Janik and Kubin were forced to drop out due to injury, meaning the No. 5 to No. 8 players all had to move up two spots for the Owls.  The most competitive match came from Ozdemir, who fought to 4-4 in the second set before eventually dropping a 6-2, 6-4 decision to Jamie Eccleton of the Trojans.

The Owls will return to the court next Saturday when they travel to Presbyterian College for a 2:00 p.m. match.
