MONTGOMERY, Ala. - Kennesaw State's men's tennis team (3-2) rolled to victories over Alabama State (0-3) and Alabama A&M (0-2) today on the campus of Alabama State University. The Owls did not drop a set in singles today, marking the first singles sweeps of the year for the Owls.
The Owls took down the Hornets of Alabama State in the morning matchup, which was delayed for a half hour due to rain in the area. Once the match started, the weather began to slowly play a role, as winds reached near 15 mph and the temperature hovered in the mid-40s. The afternoon match with the Bulldogs was even more difficult, as far as weather was concerned, as winds kicked up to a constant 20 mph north to south tailwind.
"The conditions today were simply brutal," indicated KSU Head Coach #T.J. Greggs#, "but we did a fair job of handling the wind and the cold, and the important thing is that we pulled out the victories. Both of the teams fought hard against us, and we had to work hard for these wins. We still need to pick things up to another level if we want to compete for an Atlantic Sun Conference title."
In both matches, the Owls struggled at No. 1 doubles. The Owls are now 0-5 on the season at the top spot, while holding down a 7-3 record at the No. 2 and No. 3 spots. Against Alabama State, the duo of
Louis Theodor and
Alex Toliver were downed by Bobby Brand and Lex Pierre of Alabama State, 8-4. In the second match of the day, Coach Greggs made a switch to the doubles lineup and put the duo of
Gianni Kubin and
Gokalp Ozdemir in the top spot. The Owl duo got off to a rough start and dropped the first five games, before recovering to make it interesting in an 8-5 loss to Desta Sandy and Dominique Alexander of the Bulldogs.
"I have been focusing a lot of our energy on our singles play this year," continued Coach Greggs, "but I clearly need to make some adjustments to the doubles lineup if we want to be competitive against the top teams.
Michael Browder being out today affected us a little, but people still need to be able to step up and play wherever th
The singles in both matches were all taken in straight sets by the Owls, including the first two college matches of freshman
Matthew Johnson, who dropped only one game in four sets today. Also for the Owls, freshman
Alex Toliver picked up two wins at the top spot of the singles lineup, bringing his season record to 3-1 when playing in the top spot for the Owls. Also picking up two wins for the Owls today were
Gianni Kubin,
Gokalp Ozdemir, and Alexander Pena.
The Owls will have little time to recover, as they travel south tomorrow to face off with Troy University. First serve is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. CST on the campus of the Trojans.
