KENNESAW, Ga. – The Kennesaw State women’s tennis team will head into the 2011 Atlantic Sun Conference Tournament as the No. 5 seed after defeating Mercer, 4-3, on Saturday afternoon.

The win concludes the Owls regular season with a record of 18-5 (7-3 A-Sun), while the loss ends the Bears season as they finished 4-15 (1-9 A-Sun).

“It was great to win our final regular season match so we can have some good momentum going into the conference tournament,” head coach Jeffery Kutac said. “Ayano, who is a senior captain for us this season, stepped up big today winning her doubles match with Vera, and then clinching the victory for us with her win at the No. 6 singles spot.”

The Owls took the doubles point thanks to wins by junior Vera Shkundina and Ayano Tanaka at the No. 1 position, 8-6, and junior Morgan Carney and freshman Alexandra Apostu were victorious at the No. 2 spot, 8-0.

In singles play, the Black and Gold took two of the first three matches thanks to wins by Carney and Shkundina to make the match score 3-0. Tanaka then clinched it for the Owls with a 6-2, 6-1 win.

Shkundina’s singles victory was the 50th singles win of her career.

Kennesaw State will take on the No. 4 seed Stetson in the first round of the A-Sun Tournament on Apr. 14.
