SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Kennesaw State women’s soccer team will look to close out its 2011 season on a winning note as it takes on USC Upstate on Sunday afternoon at County University Soccer Stadium.

The Owls are coming off one of its best performances of the season as they left it all out on the field in a 1-1 tie at East Tennessee State on Friday night.

In a game they had to have the Black and Gold took the early lead in the 14th minute as senior Katie Schwartz put KSU ahead scoring off a corner kick. Junior Sofia Blanco sent the ball in off the corner that went off an ETSU defender, off the crossbar and then to the feet of Schwartz. Schwartz was able to gather the ball and poke it past ETSU goalkeeper Caitlin Gaughan to give the Owls a 1-0 lead.

The Lady Bucs didn’t let the Owls enjoy the lead for very long as Genna Petersen scored in the 17th minute sneaking a shot under the sliding Melissa Hutto to tie the game up at 1-1.

Both teams had their chances in the overtime periods, but fatigue started to set in for both squads as the game ended in a 1-1 tie.

Looking ahead to Sunday’s match the Owls have never lost to USC Upstate as they hold a 7-0 all-time series record over the Spartans. KSU has outscored the Spartans by a total of 13-1 in its last four wins in the series.

USC Upstate (2-15-1, 0-8-0 A-Sun) is coming off a 1-0 loss to Mercer on Friday night. The Spartans return six starters from a team that went 3-13-2 a season ago. USC Upstate was picked to finish in 10th place in the A-Sun Preseason Poll, and they are led Michelle Calmeyn who leads the team in points with 13 on five goals and three assists.
