Kennesaw State assistant coach Montez Robinson enters his sixth season with the Black and Gold under head coach Tony Ingle and is the only coach who has been with Kennesaw State since the Owls became a Division I program in the 2005-06 season.
Hired in September of 2005, Robinson works within the Owls system in student-athlete academic advisement, recruiting, scouting and daily basketball operations.
Since Robinson’s arrival on campus, the Kennesaw State program has produced three All-Atlantic Sun Conference playing honors, a conference freshman of the Year, 25 A-Sun All-Academic Team members and several Player of the Week Award winners.
Prior to arriving at Kennesaw State, Robinson worked with Ken Littlefield Basketball Inc., where he served as a talent scout while also assisting in summer camp operations.
Before his time working for Ken Littlefield Basketball Inc., Robinson began his coaching career as an assistant coach under Allen Sharpe at Truett-McConnell Junior College in Cleveland, Ga., where he was a member of Sharpe’s staff for three seasons.
Before Robinson joined the staff at Truett-McConnell, the squad had won eight games. In his first season with the Bears, they increased their win total by 18 games, finishing he season with 26 victories and climbing to No. 13 in the national rankings and also finishing second in the conference standings.
The next season, Robinson’s squad won 19 games and was again one of the top teams in the conference. In his third season with Truett-McConnell, the Bears win total moved back to 26 games, giving Robinson 71 victories in his three years as an assistant coach.
During his time at TMC, he coached three all-conference players and one conference Player of the Year. He coached two players who went on to play professionally as well as 10 other players who went on to play at four-year programs throughout the country.
As a player, Robinson enjoyed a successful prep career as a four-year starter at Fairfield High School in Fairfield, Ala., where he earned all-state honors as a senior after averaging 20 points and 10 rebounds per game. He was a two-time all-region and all-area honoree as he was selected in both his junior and seniors seasons.
Robinson began his collegiate career at Kemper Military College in Booneville, Mo., where he was a two-year starter and captain. In his freshman season he averaged 12 points and six rebounds and in his sophomore season he scored 16 points a night while grabbing eight rebounds.
After earning an Associates Degree in Liberal Arts, Robinson attended North Georgia College and State University where he continued his playing career as a two-year starter for the Saints. He received a Bachelor of Science degree in Criminal Justice.
Robinson is married to the former Leah Hornbuckle and the couple and their daughter, Tezlyn make their home in Powder Springs, Ga.
