Head Coach Brian Bohannon Quotes
On the offense
We (offense) play with some effort and we don’t beat ourselves up, we give ourselves a chance. Earlier today, we could light it up and run the football. We could move the ball methodically down the field and we got in the red zone a couple of times where, credit to the defense, they found a way to keep the offense out. There were also some self-inflicted wounds that a young football team is going to make. We just have to learn from it and grow from it. I think in the grand scheme of things, you just have to remember that this is most of these kids’ second semester in college, you know, the majority of the football team. That’s a pretty big step to go out and play in front of a pretty awesome crowd today and keep their composure, which was what I was more concerned about than anything.
Offensively, we made a lot of strides today and I think we gained a lot of confidence that was probably much needed because, those of you who have been to the scrimmages know that it’s been defense-dominated, which is a credit to the defense.
On making as close to a real game as possible
It was big (to make the game feel as real as possible). You sit in your office and think about all of the little things that in most places where you go to are already in place, from what are we going to wear over (to the stadium), how are we going to get there, what are we going to do when we get in there, how are we going to do pregame. It’s all new, so the great thing about today is we can take everything and go through that process.
On the Fan Support
To come out and see all of the people here today for a spring game is phenomenal. I can’t say enough about this community and the support for our kids and this program. It’s what’s going to make us who we are. The enthusiasm of the community and this university is awesome. I can’t say enough good things.
Who caught your eye?
Obviously Trey White, I thought he did some really good things, and our two safeties, Sean Reynolds and Derrick Farrow. There are a lot of guys who did great things, but those guys stood out right off the bat and made some plays. Dez Billingslea flies around. He’s really athletic and hard out there in the edge. There were a lot of positives.
I think, as a young football team with this many young players, you have to take every positive and build on it. We’ll correct the negatives; we know where we are and we know the process that we’re in, but we know where we want to go. It’s not going to happen overnight and the picture’s not what we want, but we’re going to get there. Our kids know it, our staff knows it. We’re going to get to where we want to be.
Trey and Jake are both very strong and very tough competitors. I envision more than one quarterback playing in the fall. There may be a starter, but I envision more than one playing and that we play to their strengths as best as we can.
Perspective on Last Two Years
It’s just been a little over two years since I got hired. I can honestly tell you that I’ve loved every minute and every day of those two years. This university and the administration with Dr. (Dan) Papp and Vaughn (Williams) have done things the right way in a first class manner to give this program the chance to be successful. Our staff has done a great job of getting great kids with great attitudes. I’ve loved every minute of it. I wouldn’t trade it for anything. We have a great staff and great people, which make your life easy.
