Coach Brian Bohannon quotes:
Coach Bohannon opening statements:
“Well coming off the last game, it was a big deal to us to make some corrections and to come out with a purpose. We talked about all three phases of the game doing our job with championship effort, I thought we came out to play. I thought we came out with a very business-like approach of getting some work done.”
“Everything wasn’t perfect but the defense was able to do a great job of overcoming a little adversity at times and we found a way to move the ball however we needed to, which was positive. I was proud of our football team. I thought we did a better job at special teams which was a significant weakness from a week ago or two weeks ago and I thought we played closer to an all-around football game than we probably have all year. And obviously when you go back and look at the tape you’re going to find all the things, but that’s apart of coaching.
“That’s probably where our kids approach the game that was more important. Coming off a loss, sitting on it for a week, two weeks, how does that young football team respond to some things like that and I thought they came out ready to play. I was proud of them, proud of the way they did it.”
“I’ll tell you what I’m even more proud of, and I’ll tell all you guys this about our football team. Obviously this is October, its breast cancer awareness month and I’m not big on just going on to put all the stuff on just to do it because I think it takes away from what it means. So I asked our kids, if you want to wear the pink socks, I gave them one thing they could wear, and they could make a donation. Our kids and our coaches donated 1,200 dollars in a day in a half. And that’s phenomenal, it tells you about our kids, it tells you what they’re made of. They didn’t have to do it, they could do it if they wanted to, it wasn’t mandatory, but I’m awfully proud.”
On the touchdowns scored by passing:
“I don’t know if I was surprised, but I was excited. We know we have some talented guys and in the past we have worked with a talented group of receivers and our slots do a great job of catching the ball. I don’t think we had a drop all day. We threw for 308 yards, folks it is not going to get much better than that now for a running football team. But it tells you about what Coach Chesnut and our offensive staff have been able to do in order to take what we do offensively and play to the strength of our team, if that makes sense. We know we got some areas we can do some things so I give a lot of credit to our offensive staff. We have been able to tweak some things and do some things and give us the ability to do that. Not every game is going to be that way, a lot of it is what they present to us. But I give our offensive staff a lot of credit on finding ways to get the ball to guys who can make plays. Obviously it was big today, a lot of big plays today.”
On throwing the ball:
“There were some things that we knew going in that we felt good about. And we worked on a lot of different stuff in the last two weeks to get ready. We know that it’s something that we have got to be able to do. With our team, the way it is right now, it’s an asset, we have got to be able to use it, but we have to be smart how we do it. And it is a game winner, when somethings kind of working, you’ve got to get a hold of it and continue to use it in any way that you can. Give your guys a chance to be successful. “
On the offensive line being business-like:
“Yeah, it’s definitely gotten better today, we are not there yet, but it definitely got better. We have to keep working at it but you’re going to get it games, but you’re just going to have to grind it out. Three or four yards a pop, we had a few today and I though I saw some positive things but there were some more creases to work through. We still have got a lot of work to do on that but I thought we made some progress.”
Being on the receiving end of penalties:
“It’s awfully tough as you know, the thing about it is and I told them all at half time and I said guys, you’ve got to keep your composure or you’re going to be sitting on the bench next week. And that fact of the matter is, Nick Perrotta got an unsportsmanlike and if he gets another one, he’s out. You know, so that’s as good of motivation as you can get. It was a little chippy there early on especially. I thought it was better as it went but he’s got to be smart. You can say ‘he hit me first,’ you know the guys going to get called every time, it’s the guy they see last, it’s just the way it is. But I thought we settled down a little bit with that too. It’s a fine line, I like a little bit of the swag, and sometimes our guys have that. You just got to know when to draw the line.”
On special teams’ improvement from last week:
Well I’ll have to go look at the numbers but I mean heck, two weeks ago, starting field position, after kick-off was around the 47 yard line. So that alone in itself, you’re playing a good team, you’re behind the eight ball. And today, I thought that was much better. The coverage was much better, he bounced around made some things, but it wasn’t bad. We shanked that one punt we had, it could have been better. That was what, like a 10 yard punt? The emphasis we worked the heck out of it.
On the play action:
“It’s kind of how we are built. And the great thing, Coach Chesnut and those guys have done is we’ve developed, obviously we always have that down the field passing game off play action. We are an oriented team, we had some things going into the game that we felt good about. And then we have the ability to, you know, we have a good group of receivers. Give them a chance to make a play. They bailed us out a few times, some bailed us out down by the goal line. And late in the game we threw another fake to Trey Trawick on the long 3rd and 15, I don’t remember exactly, but it was long. Those guys have done a good job and Trey has done a good job of getting them the ball. When we do that, it really makes them tough on defenses when you’re a run oriented team you can spread the wealth per say where you run the ball outside, inside. It gets difficult, so we just have to continue to grow in all areas because we are going to have to use everything down this home stretch. We start conference play next week, were going to have to use everything to give our self a chance to be successful.”
Player Quotes
Running Back Chaston Bennett
How does it feel to be able to open up your game a little and contribute more success to the team?
“It felt really good, we work on various things in practice which allowed us to come out and execute our plays.”
The last couple of weeks you’ve come to the forefront of the offense, what do you envision your role going forward?
“Each week I feel myself getting better, and as long as I follow the offense plays, it puts me in position to make the plays that are expected of me.”
Quarterback Trey White
What did you see defensively that opened you up to being able to throw the ball more?
“We had a great game plan coming into the game and with the spread option that we run, my job is to get the ball in the hands of our running backs and receivers. We obviously have a game plan going into the game but it depends on what the opposing team is giving us and we execute off of that. It was great to see our hard work in practice pay off in the game.”
Have you become more comfortable throwing the ball as the season progress?
“Our attitude towards each game is to build, and that relates to the passing game as well, we got some great players and I just got to keep putting the ball in their hands.”
Linebacker Anthony Gore Jr.
How chippy did it get on the field with those guys, they had a lot of personal foul penalties?
“They talked a little trash but once you look at the scoreboard you don't pay attention to it. I don’t worry about trash talk, I just get out there and play ball.”
