HUNTSVILLE, Texas – Kennesaw State soccer begins Conference USA play with a tick in the win column following its 2-1 victory over Sam Houston.
Senior
Anabel Orozco was once again the star of the night, scoring two goals, including an all-worldly one in the first three minutes of action. With her two scores, she becomes the first Owl since Jewelia Strickland in 2012 to record a goal contribution in five-straight contests.
Coach Chris Cahill's Remarks:
"It was just a great night for us," Cahlll said. "The whole team worked hard this week in training to prepare for the conference opener. They really believed in each other and had enthusiasm for what I think is always the toughest game of the year. I'm impressed with our camaraderie and how much it helped us get on the front foot early. Not only did AB have a special night, but to win the conference opener on the road is a massive step for this program. I'm very happy with how we managed the chaos tonight and the support of the fans and families that made the trip. This is a great win for all of us!"
First Half
Before both teams could get settled into the match, the Black and Gold were already leading. In the third minute, Orozco blasted a shot from 25 feet out for the bar down goal.
The Bearkats then became the aggressors offensively, recording nine of the final 10 shots of the half. Goalkeeper
Charlee Bernal and the defense stood tall, ending the first 45 minutes up 1-0.
Second Half
After a slow 10 minutes to open up the second half, Orozco put the Owls up two goals. Her initial shot from inside the box was blocked but a failed clearance gave her another opportunity from the same area. This time she ripped it far post for her sixth goal in five games.
Sam Houston's Ellie Morgan got a goal back for The Kats in the final minute of action, but the Owls were able to hold on for their first CUSA win of the season.

The Black and Gold open the month of October back at Walens Family Field at Fifth Third Stadium to take on NM State in their first home match in nearly three weeks. The match is scheduled for Thursday at 6 p.m. and will be streamed on ESPN+.
