Owls Drop Game Two to No. 20 West Virginia, 9-1

KENNESAW, Ga. - Kennesaw State baseball fell to No. 20 West Virginia, 9-1, Saturday afternoon at Mickey Dunn Stadium at Henssler Financial Field.

West Virginia (8-1) scored single runs in the first and fourth innings and added two more in the second to build an early advantage. The Mountaineers extended their lead with a three-run eighth inning and plated two additional runs in the ninth.

The Owls (4-5) were held to four hits in the contest. Pinch-hitter Cooper Williams accounted for Kennesaw State's lone run with a solo home run to right field in the eighth inning. Trenton Lyons added a single and stole a base, while James McGee and Jackson Bradfield also recorded hits.

Nolan Sliver provided 3.1 innings of relief, allowing one run while striking out five. Nate Helman followed, working 2.2 innings and striking out three.

How it Happened 

  • T1 | A leadoff walk came around to score after a double and a sacrifice fly (1-0, West Virginia).
  • T2 | The Mountaineers added two runs on two hits and a passed ball (3-0, WVU).
  • T4 | A leadoff blast down the left field line extended West Virginia's advantage (4-0, WVU).
  • T8 | The visitors plated three runs on three hits, aided by two walks (7-0, WVU).
  • B8 | Cooper Williams lifted a pinch-hit solo home run over the right field wall (7-1, WVU)
  • T9 | A walk and two infield singles allowed the Mountaineers to extend their lead (9-1, WVU).

Notes from the Diamond  

  • Nolan Sliver worked 3.1 innings in relief, striking out five Mountaineers.
  • Saturday marked the first time that Sliver punched out five hitters in consecutive outings.
  • Nate Helman struck out a career-high three batters in a career-long 2.2 innings.
  • Cooper Williams lifted his second home run of the season, tying Charlie Jones and James McGee for the team lead.
  • Wesley Alig extended his reached-base streak to nine games after being plunked twice.
