CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. —
Nathan Walters battled to a 7-6 (9-7) set-three tiebreaker win, securing a 4-3 match victory over Chattanooga for Kennesaw State men's tennis on Friday afternoon at UTC Tennis Center.
With the match squared 3-3, the Owls' hopes of a win rested on Walters' court-five match with the Mocs' Kristof Kincses. Walters came back from a 6-7 (4-7) loss in set one to win his second set 6-4. Down 3-5 in the third, Walters climbed back to tie 6-6 and claimed the tiebreaker 9-7.
Walters, a freshman from Cirona, Spain, is now 5-1 in singles play this season with five straight wins.
"Winning these close matches is why we play college tennis," said KSU associate head coach
Simon Pritchard. "Having Xavi and Nathan out there and bringing that Spanish heart out on court was exactly what we needed to come back and win this match. We will enjoy this win tonight and then get ready to host a talented North Alabama team at home tomorrow."
KSU trailed 2-3 in the match before a tying singles win by
Xavi Ferrer on court six. Ferrer overcame TJ Ryerson 6-2, 6-7 (2-7), 7-5.
Leon Peranovic won in straight sets (6-2, 7-5) on court three for the Owls' first singles point. KSU won the doubles point with a 6-2 decision from
Dominic Ducariu and
Anthony Weingarten on court two, as well as Ferrer and Walters winning 7-6 (7-4) on three.
