KENNESAW, Ga. – Kennesaw State football sophomore linebacker
Tywon Christopher and senior wide receiver
Davis Bryson were lauded for their performances in the Owls' 44-28 victory over Middle Tennessee, being named Conference USA Defensive Player of the Week and CUSA Special Teams Player of the Week, respectively, the league announced Monday.
The CUSA award marks Christopher's second of the season and third of his career and it marks the second of Bryson's career.
The weekly awards are voted on by a panel of the league's media.
Tywon Christopher – Conference USA Defensive Player of the Week
The Thomasville, Ga. native sparked the Owls during last week's victory with a 59-yard pick six in the third quarter en route to KSU's win over MTSU. He finished with eight tackles and a tackle for loss as well as the KSU defense was on the field for a whopping 40:19 during the game.
Only eight CUSA players since 2020 have recorded a stat line of eight tackles, one tackle for loss and a pick six and Christopher is the only CUSA player to record a pick six this season.
The pick six was only the second defensive score for Kennesaw State in the last two years and the first interception score since 2024. The INT marked the second of Christopher's career and the first of the season.
The KSU defense locked up the normally sure-handed Blue Raiders, forcing them to throw as many interceptions last week (2) as they entered the contest with on the season (2).
Davis Bryson – Conference USA Special Teams Player of the Week
Bryson had one of his best games as an Owl since transitioning two years ago from quarterback to wide receiver, recording 147 all-purpose yards with a career-high 71 return yards on kickoffs. He also rolled up 30 rushing yards and 46 receiving yards on the night.
The Woodbridge, Va. native added his stamp on the game when he bookended a terrific drive for the Owls, beginning with a 52-yard kickoff return that would ultimately set up a 23-yard pass from quarterback
Rickie Collins for Bryson's first-career touchdown catch.
Bryson is only the 11
th player in CUSA history since 2000 to record 70 return yards, 30 rushing yards, 40 receiving yards and a score and is the first since 2011 (Trey Watts, Tulsa). He is also one of only two players in FBS this season with that stat line (Michael Scott, James Madison).
With his touchdown reception, Bryson became only the second player in KSU history to record a passing touchdown, rushing touchdown and receiving touchdown in their playing career (Jake McKenzie, RB (2015-18)).
