Jacksonville, Ala. – The Kennesaw State Owls matched their season total for home runs with a big blast in the fourth inning, but their comeback bid fell just short in a 5-2 battle against Jacksonville State on Saturday afternoon at Jana McGinnis Field. The Gamecocks jumped out to an early lead and held on despite the Owls' rally.
Kennesaw State continued to fight throughout the game, generating offense in the middle innings and showing grit at the plate. However, Jax State's early surge ultimately proved to be the difference.
How It Happened
After a scoreless first inning, Jacksonville State struck first in the second frame, using timely hitting to build a quick lead. The Gamecocks put together a four-run inning to take early control of the game.
Jax State added to its advantage in the third, tacking on another run to make it 5-0.
Kennesaw State found some momentum in the fourth inning. The Owls broke through offensively with a pair of hits, cutting into the deficit. Lexie Shaver lined a single through the left side, setting the stage for Ana Gore, who launched a two-run homer to left field to cut the deficit to 5-2.
Both teams settled in defensively for the remainder of the contest, as neither side could push across any additional runs over the final three innings. Emma Friedel was steady in relief, tossing three scoreless frames to keep the Gamecocks in check. Despite the late push and strong effort on the mound, the Owls were unable to overcome the early lead.
Quick Hits
- Ana Gore hit a 2-RBI home run over the fence, hitting her fourth of the season. Gore continues to lead the Owls in RBIs with 21.
- Hannah Harvey was the only Owl to have a multi-hit game.
- Emma Friedel dominated through three scoreless innings.
