KENNESAW, Ga. – Kennesaw State football linebacker
Tywon Christopher was lauded for his performance in the Owls' 33-20 triumph over UTEP to become bowl eligible, getting named Conference USA Defensive Player of the Week, the league announced Monday. Christopher is the third Owl to be earn the honor, joining
Caleb Offord (Sept. 29) and
Tylon Dunlap (Oct. 13). He is KSU's seventh honoree overall this season.
The weekly awards are voted on by a panel of the league's media.

Thrust into his first career start due to injury, Christopher had a career game as Kennesaw State won its sixth-straight game, 33-20, against UTEP on Tuesday. He recorded a team-best 12 tackles on the night, including a tackle for loss, and forced the fumble that was scooped and scored with on UTEP's first offensive drive of the game to give KSU its first points.
The Thomasville, Ga. native recorded the second-best run defense grade (96.4) in the country for Week 10 (behind only Indiana's Devan Boykin), according to
Pro Football Focus, defending the run on 31 snaps (more than 40 percent of his 72 total snaps).
The redshirt freshman also tallied the sixth-best defensive PFF rating in the country (min. 70 snaps) with an 80.2, ranking second in Group of Six conferences. Christopher anchored down and helped the Owls pitch a fourth-quarter shutout to keep UTEP at bay to hold onto the win.
The Owls are back on the road this weekend when they travel almost 1,300 miles to New Mexico State. Kickoff is set for 4 p.m. ET and will be broadcast live on ESPN+ and the KSU Owls app.
