Exciting New Season Ahead for the Owls: New Conference, Challenges, and Faces

As the 2024 volleyball season kicks off, the Owls are brimming with energy and anticipation. With a revamped roster and a move to a new conference, there's a substantial sense of excitement around the program. The team's blend of youthful talent and seasoned leaders sets the stage for what promises to be a thrilling and dynamic season.

This fall marks the first season of competition for the Black and Gold as a member of Conference USA. KSU's new membership comes on the heels of 18 seasons with the Atlantic Sun Conference following the Owls' move to Division I in 2005-06.

The offseason has been a transformative period for the Owls. The roster sees the addition of six freshmen and the team's first-ever transfer, bringing a fresh and invigorating energy to the squad.

Key players to watch start with preseason all-conference selection outside hitter Manu Johnsen, who excelled in the ASUN as a two-time all-league member while leading the conference in kills and points in 2023. Courtney Brown, who began to find her stride towards the end of last season, is expected to play a significant role this year, bringing both consistency and leadership. Maggie Butkovich will be stepping into a larger role in her junior role, tasked with improving her playmaking and passing abilities. Veteran players Leah Freeman and Caroline will also play pivotal roles, providing both leadership and stability as the team's primary serve receivers and defenders.

While specific results are not the primary focus, the team aims to be among the top 100 in the RPI and hopes to position itself for an at-large bid to the championships. With a young roster, and a new conference landscape, the emphasis will be on growth and improvement throughout the season.

"My goal is to help this team reach its full potential this fall," KSU Head Coach Keith Schunzel.

The transition to Conference USA brings its own set of challenges. Adjusting to new opponents, varying game environments, and creating a new road routine are all part of the adjustment process. Despite the hurdles, the team is ready to face these challenges head-on, with a focus on adapting and thriving in their new competitive setting.

This weekend marks the season opener for the Owls, they will host Indiana and Wichita State on Aug. 30 and 31 in the KSU Invitational. These early matchups are an opportunity to gauge the team's progress and see how they stack up against high-level competition. While specific outcomes are not the primary concern, the goal is to continue growing and improving as the season progresses.

As the new season unfolds, the Owls are set to embark on an exciting journey of development and discovery. With a mix of fresh talent, seasoned leaders, and a focus on growth, the team is ready to embrace the challenges and opportunities ahead.
